Pat Morrisey
Sam Lema

The teacher quiz always generates a good response. Over a dozen people responded with guesses from one teacher to 8-10 identifications. Thanks to Regis Urschler ('55), Al Young and Pete Grego from the class of 67, Dave Johnston ('71), Kevin Quinn ('74), Tom Winner ('75), Dave Bursic ('79), DeeDee Reukaf ('81), Shari Brown ('82), Mark Milksop ('85), Chris Sabo ('91), and Katie Roos ('12) for their guesses.

While most people knew 3 or 4 teachers, Shari Brown Butler ('82) knew 5 faculty members. The prize (a gold star for their forehead) goes to DeeDee Reukauf Yoest ('81), Chris Sabo ('91), and Melanie Linn Gutkowski (00) for being able to identify 6 teachers.

The only teacher who went unidentified was Patricia Morrisey (E) who taught chemistry in the early 70's.

Thanks to all who participated. Don't for get to study for teacher final in the June newsletter.
This month's Alumni Spotlight

Melissa Sadowski Carr
NC Class of 1985
Update us on your life since graduation

Clarion University was Melissa's first stop after graduation from North. She was recruited to teach in Daytona Beach, Florida after graduation in 1990 and spent the next 30 years in Volusia County, Florida as a teacher, reading coach, assistant principal, district technology director, and principal. Along the way Melissa picked up a masters degree as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. She received the honor of "Innovative Principal of the Year" state finalist in 2019 and "Secondary Principal of the Year" in 2021.

Favorite Teachers and Classes

Mrs Militello, Ms Young, Mr Heiner, Doc Hohler, and Ms Hickey were her favorite teachers and coaches. Three years of French with Mrs Militello was her favorite subject with English as another.

Favorite Memories of North Catholic

As a cheerleader and a performer in the spring musicals, Melissa's favorite memories include, "walking the halls of Troy to go to cheer practice (we practiced on those marble floors with no major injuries!)" Also, "performing in "Hello Dolly", "L'il Abner", and having the lead in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". Other memories include monthly school dances in the gym, selling green carnations for St Patrick's Day. As senior cheer captain, "cheering at JC Stone field on Friday nights for our fighting Trojan football team then heading to Monticello's for cheese stick afterward."

Part Time Job While at North

With cheerleading, yearbook, softball, and spring musicals, part time work was limited to babysitting during the school year, however Melissa was part of the summer custodial crew at school to help pay her tuition.

Who were your Friends and Hangouts at North

"I was very involved with school activities and studying to keep up with my AP coursework. All of that allowed me the gift of making friends with various and diverse groups. My most memorable hangout was daily lunch table friends: Joanna, Maggie, Michelle, Liz, and Patty. There was always a boisterous conversation with lots of others stopping by the table to say hello or chat about events from the last class or last weekend."

Memories of Graduation Day

"Driving to Oakland and beautiful, cavernous St Paul Cathedral dressed in yellow cap and gowns. Pictures afterward with everyone while we laughed and hugged one another."

What Did North Catholic Mean to You?

"It was my happy place. I loved wearing the red and gold and being a part of something in the community where I lived on Troy Hill. It gave me the foundation and confidence to go out into the world to make it a better place."

"My time at NC was very special for me and helped to shape who I would become in life. I was friends with various groups who helped me see different perspectives. This is where my hunger to see more and do more took root. The experiences at NC took me outside my comfort zone and pushed me to take chances and set lofty goals. I am forever true to dear old NC."

Flashback Photo

Last Month's Flashback
This is a picture taken from the 1998 Trojan yearbook. The cation reads, "Sophomores Jessica Lisjak, Melanie Linn, and Rachel Scheid display their medieval costumes in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel." The event was the annual Trojan Triumph, "An Evening of Medieval Merriment."

Hillary Getty Fredrick ('00) said, "that photo was from the Trojan Triumph Auction and the ladies pictured are Sarah Lisjack, Melanie Lynn and Rachael Scheid. I think...the theme for the Auction was medieval merriment."

The Linn sisters, Melanie Linn Gutkowski ('00) and Dina ('02), easily identified all of the people.

Rachel (Scheid) Sedmak (‘00) said, "I actually know the people in this month’s flashback! Jess Lisjak, Melanie Linn, and I were dressed in costume for the Trojan Triumph auction, which must have had a medieval theme that year. I’m pretty sure it was 1998."

"My family was texting me from all directions about the newsletter this morning before I even saw it. Thanks for including the photo."

This Month's Flashback

Military Legacy Scholarship

North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date we have raised over $29,400.00 to fund this annual scholarship. A special thanks those who have contributed this year towards this goal: John A. Docherty III-Class of 1954; Capt. Michael D. The Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship continues to grow. To date, our classmates have raised over $35,000 in donations and pledges. Special shout out goes to ART MURPHY for his donation of $10,000. A big thank you to MIKE CROWLEY and DENNIS PFEIFFER for their generous donations.

We need the help of our classmates to grow the scholarship fund. If we can get more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing, there is no end to what the money can do to help a student to get the great education that North provided to us and continues to do so today. No contribution is too small. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bob Colbert (bobcolbert@comcast.net) or Walt Quinn (quinn.walter@comcast.net)

Thanks also to classmateS WAYNE BYERLY and DENNY CRIBBINS for committing to making a monthly donationThey join a number of fellow classmates including Wayne Young, Walt Quinn, and Bob Colbert who have been making a small monthly donation for the past three years that is put on their credit card. As Bob said, "it's less that the cost of a bottle of wine." If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.

Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship

Kathy Hickey Monti's limitless love and passion for helping others was apparent to everybody she met.  Her pride for North Catholic began in 1973, when her high school closed and she enrolled in the first co-ed class at North as a junior. Kathy led the charge to keep her school's basketball team together. As a standout guard and the very first team captain of North's first women's basketball program, Kathy and her fellow Trojanettes began a women's basketball dynasty that is alive and continues to thrive today. Following her graduation from North in 1975, Kathy played basketball in college and served as team captain and leader. Soon, she was recruited to come back to North and take on the role of Assistant Basketball Coach for the girl's team and with Coach Don Barth, her mentor, friend and former coach, led them to win multiple state championships. When North opened in Cranberry Township, Kathy continued to volunteer her time at the new school that she loved so dearly until her last breath. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls in athletics.

To continue Kathy's legacy and mission in life of helping others, a scholarship has been established in her name. More than $20,000 has already been raised. The purpose of the Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life. This year's recipient is Dacia Lewandowski, NC '23.  If you'd like to donate to this scholarship, please click here or checks can be sent payable to North Catholic with "Kathy Monti Scholarship Fund" in the Memo and mailed to North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.
Military Alumni
Thanks to many of you, our list of alumni who have served in our nation's military services has grown to almost 1,500. We thank all of you who have taken the time to help us with this endeavor. Perhaps you have noticed that recently an asterisk has been added next to name of more than two dozen individuals on the list. This indicates the individual died while in the military, either Killed in Action or a non-battle death. There may be more alumni who died while serving. If you know of someone that should have the asterisk added next to their name please let us know. We will always appreciate your efforts to help us update this honor roll of our alumni.

Thank you to all of our alumni for their service to our country!

Planned Giving
Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at amorrison@northcatholic.org.
