BSO Member Spotlight
Diana Davidson, cello
When Diana first heard a live performance by the Seattle Symphony in a community outreach program at a theater near the SeaTac airport, she knew she wanted to play the cello. She enrolled in the public school string program, and playing the cello has been a main component of her life ever since. She earned a BA in music education at WWSC, now WWU, followed by an MA in music Ed from the University of Washington.

After teaching strings and general elementary music in Kirkland for four years, Diana embarked on a career of 30+ years teaching the children of US military members at bases overseas. With endorsements in several fields, she taught English, geography, elementary classroom, and art, as well as all areas of music, including high school band. (“Oh dear!”) Diana’s favorite position was her last one, half-time music, half-time art in an elementary school. She jokes that part of the reason she loved the job was that most of her students were shorter than she.

Every place she lived, Diana made connections with other musicians, both Americans and local nationals. On Okinawa, she organized chamber music concerts; proceeds supported the Pearl S. Buck foundation. Near Tokyo, she and a pianist with a home that featured a Mt. Fuji view were the core of chamber music performances. Other Asian assignments were Korea and the Philippines.
In Germany, Diana was a member of a local string orchestra. A yearly highlight was the December concert in a church. The first time Diana participated in this event, she arrived late for the dress rehearsal, not understanding that “halb sieben” meant 6:30, not 7:30. You can imagine her astonishment and embarrassment when she walked into the packed church. The only way to the front was up the center aisle; she found her chair had been removed—the director thought she was a no-show.

Upon retiring to Kirkland, Diana became involved in a chamber music club, of which Patti Beasley is a member. Knowing Diana was moving to Bainbridge in June, 2019, Patti let Diana know of the BSO. Diana is thrilled to be part of a new musician family, and is thankful for her warm reception from other members. Diana and her husband enjoy hiking, bicycling and traveling—though traveling is on hold during these lockdown days.
George Sale, violin
George began violin lessons at age seven, playing in the grade school and high school orchestras in his hometown of Missoula, Montana. During his undergraduate years, he played for two years in the Harvard/Radcliff Orchestra. In 1986, he joined the Bainbridge Orchestra and has played here under the baton of several distinguished conductors. He plays fiddle and klezmer music with his daughter. Together with other orchestra members, he plays in two quartets. He is grateful for 34 joyful years of music, friendship, the support of BPA, and most importantly, “the enthusiastic support of our loyal audience members.”

The Bainbridge Orchestra was founded in 1972 by the late David Pence, when the Island’s population was less than 13,000. Adopted under the BPA umbrella in the spring of 1993, Bainbridge Orchestra changed its name to Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra in 2006. The symphony serves a musically rich role in our community, uniting artists spanning generations and skill levels, and coming from all walks of life, to share their love of music and learn from each other.
