Oral Antivirals Now Available to LTC Facilities to Treat COVID-19

The federal government has launched two new initiatives, “Test to Treat” and “Long-Term Care Pharmacy Program,” to create an allocation of oral antiviral medications for utilization in vulnerable populations. Via the Long-Term Care Pharmacy Program, as of March 7, long term care (LTC) pharmacies can direct order from the federal allocation, which has significantly increased the access to these lifesaving therapies for LTC residents who are at increased risk for developing severe COVID-19. CMS: Quality measure threshold changes coming

Skilled nursing facilities have an additional tool to measure their own quality improvement efforts under a new change to the quality measures rating domain.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Monday issued a reminder to providers that it plans to implement the quality measure rating threshold changes with the April 2022 refresh.

The update was first announced in a March 2019 memo but the public health emergency has delayed its implementation. READ MORE
AHCA/NCAL Report Finds SNF Quality Of Care Has Risen Over Last Decade

Provider Magazine (3/18, 151K) said a new report [PDF] released by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living on Friday "shows the quality of care in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) has been on an upward trend in the 10 years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic." The findings demonstrate "that industry-wide efforts to raise the standard of care have benefited long term care residents across the country." AHCA/NCAL president and CEO Mark Parkinson said of the report, "Providers and caregivers should be recognized for these improvements made over the past decade, even as we raise the bar even higher. But that will only be possible if health policy officials and lawmakers help us secure the resources we need moving forward."
Parkinson calls on providers to fight Biden’s ‘offensive’ reform plans

The leader of the nation’s largest nursing home association is urging operators to battle “ridiculous” efforts to increase fines and other parts of the administration’s recently announced reform package.

President Biden’s comments about nursing homes in his first State of the Union Address may have been relatively mild, but language released a day earlier about his proposed reform plans was “offensive,” said American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living President and CEO Mark Parkinson. In Case You Missed It
Clinical Update from KHCA Consultant Linda Farrar

When documenting survey findings this week, I ran across a couple of issues that haven’t been cited for a while. There were three citations for F558 Accommodation of Needs, both in the NE region. The first one addressed dining table height and the fact that the resident had to reach up to the table to be able to feed herself. The issue became the correction. What system do you have to ensure that your residents are at the appropriate height at dining tables?

Also inside this week's update:
  • Non-functioning over-bed light, which was tagged at F558, rather than F584, which addresses the environment
  • Resident Right tags
  • Facility Assessment
