Offerings in May

We continue to give thanks for the strong support for ministry that we receive through all of your  monetary gifts. As you can see from the chart below, we are close to meeting our budgeted income for the month of May, with one week left.  With your help, we are hoping to rise to that opportunity together and then finish the fiscal year with equally strong support in June.

When Will We Be Able to Gather Together at Church?

Our congregation leaders and staff are working closely with the Strategic Planning Team at St. Mark's to develop plans that are consistent with our core values and our mission. We are also guided by helpful counsel from our bishops and ELCA denominational leaders. In a recent letter to Governor Inslee written by the bishops of ELCA synods in the Pacific Northwest, they said:

"At the same time that we value our freedom to worship and yearn for the day when we can gather for song and sacraments, our immediate priority as Lutheran bishops is the health and safety of each of our pastors, deacons, and church members, as well as the physical well-being of all citizens. As St. Paul said to the church in Galatia, "You are called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as opportunities for self-indulgence, but become servants to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' In light of the best medical analysis available, we believe that it is too soon to safely open for worship on such short notice. Instead, we are calling upon our 300 congregations to exercise their God-given liberty by caring for all people and proceeding ahead in the safest way possible. Specifically, we are asking our Lutheran congregations to mindfully develop a phased plan for re-opening that follows state and county guidelines and is based on the most current advice of public health institutions such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention."

We Want to Include Your Input in Our Planning for the Future

Our St. Mark's Strategic Planning Team has developed a survey that you will all be receiving via email in the next few days. Look for a special edition of The Bridge for details on how you can add your voice to the very important process of planning our mission and ministry together in these transformational times.

Moral Voices, Moral Choices

The Peace and Justice Committee at St. Mark's invites us all to use our moral voices to advocate for justice in the following areas: food, housing, creation, and immigration. We are also invited to make moral choices in our personal behavior that impact these areas.

The National Seed Strategy Supports Creation
Human influences such as invasive species, altered wildfire regimes, and natural disasters are negatively affecting our native plant communities and the many species that depend upon them. Our ability to repair these damaged lands and stem the loss of cultural and economic benefits to society depends upon appropriate seed, research, decision tools, and public support for ecological restoration. Through collaboration and communication, we can more effectively manage public lands and protect our valuable natural resources.

The National Seed Strategy fosters interagency collaboration to guide the development, availability, and use of seed needed for timely and effective restoration. The Strategy includes four goals, with associated objectives and initial actions (2015-2020) to improve seed supplies for restoring healthy and productive native plant communities.

The National Seed Strategy for Rehabilitation and Restoration will help guide ecological restoration across large landscapes of the United States, especially lands damaged by rangeland fires, invasive species, severe storms and drought.

Organizations and individuals at the national, state and local level all will contribute to common goals, pooling resources, sharing information and achieving results for advancing plant conservation on a broad scale.

The National Seed Strategy: Making Progress   is now available online. This document highlights work being done to address each goal of the Seed Strategy, followed by ecoregional projects that illustrate the extent of collaborations that are underway to lay the foundation for a more comprehensive network of collectors, testers, and growers to make native plants more available across the country.

Mask Shortage Concerns: Updated

We have received several requests for masks to be made at home, below is the updated information received this week.

Lutheran World Relief  is now asking for simple homemade masks to be shared with people overseas who do not have access to basic protection.  If you can sew, for specifics, please follow the link  www.lwr.org/masks .

Nativity  House had a huge response to the masks donated and is in need of more. Masks can be dropped off to the church mail slot or  directly delivered at the loading dock at Nativity House any morning. Please make sure any drop offs at church are labeled for their end use so we can  direct deliveries to the correct locations.

MultiCare has changed their policy and is now requesting homemade cloth masks In response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) recent recommendation for all citizens to wear face masks when out in public, MultiCare is welcoming cloth mask donations from the community, in an effort to reduce the risk of transmission. If you are willing to make and donate cloth masks, we thank you. Please note the following instructions: Use a mask pattern that includes a type of wire (e.g., pipe cleaner) so the mask can be fitted over the nose. If possible, use a high-density fabric such as quilters cotton or a woven fabric like batik. This will allow for a better filtration rate. Do not create masks that use rubber bands for the ear loops. The rubber bands can cause irritation and skin breakdown.

Deliveries can be made at:
MultiCare Tacoma General/Mary Bridge Children's/Allenmore Hospitals - Tacoma General loading dock

Confirmed 4/28/20 they are still accepting masks, there were false comments on Facebook that said hospitals were no longer accepting masks.  Their website to includes a specific pattern and construction for the home made masks. The design can be found on the website under donations:  https://www.chifranciscan.org/patients-and-visitors/covid-19/covid-19-donations
They will accept all masks made from any pattern. Thank you for your donations. You can deliver in person or send by mail to the below addresses:

Tinted Glass

This week we have a family friendly activity. Easy instructions as well as links to multiple websites with ideas are connected  here . Tinted glass bottles and jars look great in the yard, can be made into windchimes, or are beautiful way to display seasonal flowers.

Reminder: While the Church office is closed please send any craft suggestions & comments to  katie.cootsona@gmail.com . We'd love to see pictures of your projects.

Member Notes and News

Thank you so much to all the mask makers out there!
I work for Mary Bridge at the SeaMar Community Health Center on the hilltop in Tacoma. Sharon, Katie, and others have made cloth masks for us to provide to our patients and staff, and I can't begin to express how grateful I am for this! As you know, people of color and LatinX people in our community have been hit especially hard by this virus, and financially it's difficult to find money for any extras - even masks. To be able to provide families with masks to protect them, their loved ones, and our whole community, is a much appreciated gift.  The need continues- especially as we begin the process of phasing in more clinic visits and community activities.
So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Melanie Summerour
