Is Your Facility's Drinking Water Safe?
Hygieneering is ready to test and assist in providing engineering solutions to reduce the lead in your drinking water, making it safe for everyone.
What is the source of Lead?
The most common sources of lead in drinking water are lead pipes and plumbing fixtures. Certain pipes that carry drinking water from the water source to the home may contain lead. Household plumbing fixtures, solder, and pipe fittings made prior to 1986 may also contain lead.
How lead gets into drinking water?
Lead can enter drinking water when a chemical reaction occurs in plumbing materials that contain lead. This is known as corrosion – dissolving or wearing away of metal from the pipes and fixtures. This reaction is more severe when water has high acidity or low mineral content.
Risk from lead in water
The US EPA states there is no safe blood level has been identified for young children, all sources of lead exposure for children should be controlled or eliminated. EPA has set the maximum contaminant level goal for lead in drinking water at zero because lead can be harmful to human health even at low exposure levels. Lead is a toxic metal that is persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the body over time. Risk will vary depending on the individual, the chemical conditions of the water, and the amount consumed.

Summer Asbestos Abatement Projects
|
Each year, Hygieneering performs inspections, project design/bid services, on-site project management/air sampling, and reporting to support Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) asbestos abatement projects for our school clients throughout the Chicagoland area. Whether it has been to support gross “Friable” or “Non-Friable” abatement projects, large or small scale, our clients have remained busy in conducting school upgrades, capital improvement projects, demolition and new construction.
The Summer of 2021 has shown to be one of our busiest seasons over the last several years. Through the month of June and halfway through July we have managed and supported over 3 million dollars of asbestos abatement work, and the work is still not done. Hygieneering provided daily project management and sampling during the abatement/mitigation activities to ensure the projects performance were conducted in strict compliance with IDPH, IEPA, OSHA, City of Chicago and NESHAP regulations.
The following photos represent some on-site activity shots during this years asbestos abatement projects.

Water Discharge Monitoring Reports are due July 31.
This is a friendly reminder that Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans are only good for 5 years, at which point it either needs to be updated or, if nothing changes, needs minimal updates to show this is the same plan, but it applies for another 5 years. This isn't a set it and forget it item, you need to keep tabs on how long you've had it and make any necessary updates, even if it's just a cover page with a new 5 year anniversary review date.
