COMMITTEE UPDATES
AGHP Committees are active. Here’s a quick look at what our committees are doing right now.

Standards 1 imageStandards 2 imageStandards and Specifications
The long term goal is to develop standard specifications for all the geohazard solutions in collaboration with different agencies like ASTM. New standards will help to improve the quality of the project and the image of the geohazard industry. Up to now, there have been no standard specifications for geohazard solutions in North America. Having standard testing will make it easier for engineers and contractors to select the right product for different applications.

The Standards and Specifications Committee is working on standard specifications for simple drapery material. The committee has identified a list of tests that are relevant to simple drapery like the punch test, tensile strength, and seam connection. The new standard shall include not only testing to compare the products available on the market but also some index test. The index tests shall be used for quality control of the material and installation on a job site.

Committee Actions: Initial action was to identify the existing standards for simple drapery systems around the world and evaluate if we can use these standards for the North America market.

The Committee has already determined the testing procedures for the following product characteristics:

  • Minimum Mesh Opening
  • Corrosion Protection
  • Unit Weight
A Committee Task Group has been formed to work on the following tests:
  • Punch
  • Tensile Strength Parallel and Perpendicular to the Main Direction
  • Seam Connection
For the tests, we are searching for laboratories in the USA that can perform them.

We are expecting to have a first draft within the next few months.

Post Anchoring System
The Post Anchoring Committee is putting together a survey with the following mission statement in mind: “As of today, the practicing design engineer has no guidance when it comes to prescribing appropriate anchorage for dynamic, flexible-net geohazard mitigation systems. Current practices show a large range in solutions but a clear trend over the past years has been towards stronger, more rigid “foundations,” the appropriateness of which are debatable and may even hamper the performance of systems that are, at their core, meant to be flexible. One of the primary goals established by the Post Anchoring System Committee is to assemble a circular/guideline that would be made available to the geohazards industry through the AGHP website. This circular would provide a design framework and performance criteria for post anchoring systems based on what works, what doesn’t, and where further investigation is required.” If you are interested in participating, please contact Becky Slaybaugh at [email protected].

OTHER NEWS

HGS Call for Papers
The 66th Annual Highway Geology Symposium (HGS) will be held 14 – 17 September 2015 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. This year’s host for the Highway Geology Symposium is the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. There will be technical sessions along with industry sponsors and exhibitors. Mark your calendars now!

The HGS review team for Technical Programs invites papers on landslides, retaining structures, soil and rock slope design, foundations, karst terrain, instrumentation, rockfalls, rock slope stabilization, geosynthetics, risk and management systems, ground improvement, and geological and geotechnical innovations. Papers on subjects concerning highway-related geological and geotechnical problems and the solutions developed to address them are also of interest. Papers that focus on practical solutions will be given first consideration and will be considered on a first come basis. The deadline for submission of the 200 – 250 word abstract is 2 March 2015. Please check the Highway Geology Symposium website for updates: www.highwaygeologysymposium.org.
