NO 37 - 2019

Vale  Brigadier Jim Townley

Sad news to commence this newsletter; James Harold Townley passed away on 22 October 2019. For those who crossed paths with Jim you know what a gentleman and great bloke he was. For those that did not know him you have missed a rewarding experience.

Jim graduated from the Royal Military College in 1960. He joined 103 Field Battery in Malaysia  and was posted to   131 Div Loc Bty in early 1965 as an ACBO (Assistant  Bombardment Officer). This was before we adopted the UK term "Artillery Intelligence ".

Jim took 106 Field Battery RAA to Singapore in 1971 thus providing the Australian component of 28 ANZUK Field Regiment. His many postings after that included Exchange Officer USA, Commanding Officer of 1st  Field Regiment RAA, DRA, DGLWP Army HQ and Commandant Army Staff College.

Jim is survived by his wife Wendy, son Peter and daughters Penny & Sally. A gentleman of great wit and presence has gone from our midst. RIP Jim.

Ipswich RSL 25 Pounder Restoration

Tim Wyatt has posted the following information on the Royal Australian Artillery Face Book page.

The 25 Pdr held by the Ipswich RSL has undergone yet another restoration. Fitted is a dummy range drum/sight mount (the original went "walkies several years ago). There is no information who made the mount or sight.  It is suggested that  those interested contact the property manager of the Ipswich RSL.

PUCKAPUNYAL COMBINED ARMS HERITAGE AND LEARNING CENTRE (CAHLC)

There has been movement at the station.  The Puckapunyal Combined Arms Heritage and Learning Centre is a new facility to be located at Puckapunyal Military Area (PMA) subject to Government and Parliamentary approval.

The aim of the project is to provide exhibition space, storage, restoration and administrative facilities for the heritage collections of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps  and the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery , to be displayed, maintained and developed for the education and training of corps personnel and to inform the general public on the history of the Army.

The Project is currently scheduled to seek Investment Committee endorsement mid 2021 with Government and Parliamentary approval late 2021 to early 2022.

Timetable projections see the bulk of work being conducted  from 20120 to 2025 with completion scheduled for 2026.

It should be noted that the project  has been discussed amongst key stakeholders, capability manager and the
Project Sponsor and is not seen as a high priority at this time and therefore is unlikely to be easily re-profiled and schedule accelerated.

Heads Up Gentlemen-A Life of Action and Adventure

Ben Lans, a RAAHC member, has written  a memoir of his Army time... a lighthearted read of my travels and adventures. It's a personal story, a bit about active service in Vietnam, postings to Singapore in the 'Raj' days and London at the end of the Cold War, all told with a bit of humour in an easy to read style. It also includes accounts of my 'adventure training' on some of Australia's wild rivers such as the Franklin in Tassie, a first descent of the Herbert River, and the Mitchell River in North Queensland.

Give it a go, it's available online at

Painting of M777 and Detachment  by Mr Phillip Pomroy

In May 2017 the Australian Artillery Association very kindly presented the RRAA with a large oil painting of an M777 and detachment by Mr Phillip Pomroy. The painting now hangs in the School of Artillery.

A proposal was discussed at the Regimental Committee Meeting in Feb this year regarding prints of the painting, and it was agreed that there would be a run of 200 prints of which 50 would be numbered and signed by the artist.

The prints have now been produced and a low-res image is shown below.

The only difference between the image above and the hard-copy prints is that the prints have a 40mm white border for framing purposes. The overall dimensions of the print are 672 mm x 415 mm.

The signed prints will be sold for $100 each, and the unsigned prints for $35 each.  Additional unsigned copies can be printed if there is the demand.

Individual prints will be available for purchase in November and orders may be placed with MAJ Gary Down at email [email protected].

The Aiguillette

Many people are confused with regard to the difference between a lanyard and an aiguillette. Originally a lanyard was a cord used to secure a jackknife, which was used for cutting loose horses that became entangled in head and heel ropes, and for removing stones from horses' hooves, and a fuze key was also attached to the lanyard.

The Lanyard

The aiguillette is a series of plaited cords which were originally used for tying-up bundles of forage by cavalrymen. Today the lanyard is worn to represents corps or units, and the aiguillette is now worn on ceremonial occasions by officers of the General Staff, their military assistants and other selected officers.
