Important Information: Testing Update
Hello Lawton Families-

Welcome Back from Spring Break! I hope that everyone had a fun-filled and relaxing break. Upon returning to school, the testing season will be in full swing! Some very important things to remember during this time.

  • Do not make any appointments on a testing day! If a student leaves campus before completing the test, they can not complete it on a different day.
  • Please arrive to school on time. If a student arrives after a test session has begun, they will have to wait and do a make-up.
  • Get a good night's rest.
  • Please do not be absent on the testing days. Please refer to the testing dates below.
Thank you for your continued support. As always, you can contact me any time with questions or concerns, alison.roscoe@ocps.net.

WHY: Teacher Spotlight
Ms. Karbal

What is your Educational background?
I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2013 with a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. Go Knights! Prior to graduating, I worked as a teaching assistant at UCP.

How/when did you discover your passion for teaching?
I discovered my passion for teaching at an early age. In elementary school, there was a PreK student with a learning disability. Her name was Sky. In the mornings, I was partnered with Sky to help her with her assignments. It brought me tremendous joy to work with her and be able to help her be successful. I went on through my schooling experiences to answer the classic question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” with, a teacher. By the time I reached college, my parents had convinced me that nursing would be a great career. I took my first anatomy class, and while everyone was excited about the human body and learning more, I had zero interest and decided to follow my true passion.

What has been your most memorable moment in the classroom?
My most memorable moment in the classroom is having a new group of students enter my room for the first time. They bring some experiences with them and some prior knowledge, but oftentimes many do not know how to read. It brings me such joy to teach young children how to read and spend the year filling their heads with tips and tricks to help them be successful. I like to make learning fun by giving my students hands-on experiences. By the end of the year, it is such an incredible feeling to see such an interest in reading. The students that once struggled become so confident. They are so proud of themselves for reading fluently and independently. I will always remember that I was able to make a difference.

Anything else that you would like people to know about you (hobbies /interests)?
I spend my time out of the classroom surrounded by the people I love. I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful boys, Colton and Bryson. We enjoy going to Disney, relaxing at the beach, and cheering on the Knights. We also love to travel and make new memories. When I have spare time, I enjoy crafting and binge watching shows.
HOW: Learning in Action
Ms. Silva’s Kindergarten class loves to read! They have won the traveling trophy for the entire 3rd nine weeks. So far they have earned 130 points together. Keep up the good work!
Ms. Crider’s class does not waste any time! They have been working hard all year to improve their writing skills and prepare for middle school.
HOW: Partners in Education & Volunteers
Thank you Waterford Lakes Target for donating items for a gift basket. The basket was awarded to a family that attended our Coffee With the Counselor event on March 8th. The basket included items that can be used to promote positive behavior at home. Thank you, Target!

The LCE Behavior Buzz

Our PBIS focus for the month of March is a review for “Be Safe”. Our students and staff will revisit and practice these traits on campus, home and our community by demonstrating their best strategies to “Be Safe”.

Our students continue to perform an outstanding job modeling our monthly PBIS expected behaviors throughout campus. Students are continuing to be rewarded with ice cream parties and prestige recognition of their efforts. Congratulations to all of our students!

Upcoming events: We have exciting news coming with our PBIS store. We are preparing for school spirit shirts and rewards for students demonstrating our PBIS expected behavior! Stay tuned for more details!

Parents: If you capture your child using these skills at home, send in your drawings or photos! We would love to showcase them here!

March PBIS Pro Tip: “Be Safe” “I choose school safe activities while I’m at recess”, “I carefully walk through the hallways using walking feet” and “I think about my choices before I act on them”.

Welcome back again from Spring Break!

2022 Week of the Family Essay and Art Contests
WHAT: Data & Goals
Another tool we use at Lawton Chiles to increase student engagement in reading is Accelerated Reader (AR). Each quarter, students complete a STAR assessment. This computer-based assessment asks the students a series of questions and based on results provides the reading Zone of Proximal Development. The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is defined as the space between what a learner can do without assistance and what a learner can do with adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers. You may have noticed your student showing you a range score pertaining to AR i.e. 3.6-5.6. This is their ZPD and means they may check out books that are between third grade, sixth month to fifth grade, sixth month level. Each student has an Accelerated Reader quarterly point goal and it is a part of their English/Language Arts grade.

Throughout the year we’ve seen phenomenal growth with more students getting close or achieving their quarterly AR goal. Additionally we have an initiative in place in which students are able to earn Accelerated Reader Bronze, Silver, or Gold status and receive rewards! See below for details:

Kindergarten - 2nd grade:
● Bronze- 5 points above the personal goal
● Silver- 10 points above the personal goal
● Gold- 15 points above the personal goal

3rd - 5th grade:
● Bronze- 5 points above the personal goal
● Silver- 10 points above the personal goal
● Gold- 20 points above the personal goal

Prizes:
● Bronze- popsicle or ice cream sandwich
● Silver- popsicle or ice cream sandwich + cool toy
● Gold- popsicle or ice cream sandwich + cool toy + lunch with the principal

In the front lobby, students who’ve achieved this status are showcased on a bulletin board!
We encourage you to read with your students and ask questions to ensure comprehension. It is encouraged to have students read their Accelerated Reader books at least two times prior to taking quizzes.
Have a great week!
