WORKSHOP
Bookmaking Basics: Sewing on Frames I
 with Ashley Thayer

Sunday, February 25, 10am-4pm
NBG Studio at The Folk School

$60 NBG members
$70 non-members
  Materials fee: $10

This workshop introduces the technique of binding a book on a frame, a practice that dates back to the Middle Ages. After looking at examples of antique books, and learning how to string the sewing frame, we will create a model book using three different techniques of sewing across the spine. Cover boards will be added as we explore several options for attaching them to the text block. You will leave with a sampler of techniques and directions, useful as a reference for future projects (see model on left in above photo).

Class size is limited to 6. Register with instructor here.

Instructor Ashley Thayer has a keen  interest in the binding techniques found in old books. She seeks out vintage materials such as buttons and marbled papers for her own books, making them contemporary and historic at the same time. She designed and produced the set of sewing frames that are used for Sewing on Frames workshops at NBG.

Hedi Kyle is credited with the design of this clever combination of pocketed folder and journal. Its pockets and cover, folded from a single sheet of paper, are  strengthened with book cloth before sewing in the journal pages. In this Studio Session we will make a model of the folded cover for future reference before creating two finished wallets.

Class size limited to 8. Register with instructor here. (2 places left)

NEW DISPLAY AT UAF RASMUSON LIBRARY

Artist Feature:
Oralee Nudson
Systems Administrator
UAF - Geographic Information Network of Alaska

Following a lifetime of crafting during long cold Alaskan winter evenings, the discovery of artist books has given Oralee Nudson a venue to combine her many interests and favorite mediums into one form. Her collection of artist books on display features works and models of varying book binding techniques and materials inspired by nature, metalsmithing, handmade papers, and computer technology.  Many of the structures were learned in Fairbanks from classes taught by local book arts community members.  Oralee enjoys learning these new techniques and exploring them further using out-of-the-ordinary materials and ideas.
