Did you know that 1 in 10 people are affected by a rare disease? One of two patients diagnosed with a rare disease are children. Also, 95% of rare diseases lack an FDA approved treatment.  

On April 9th the Missouri Cures Education Foundation will host a Rare Disease Symposium in St Louis to raise awareness of rare diseases and bring patient advocates together. The keynote speaker will be Nicole Boice, Founder of Global Genes and Co-Founder of RARE-X. Please click on this link for more information and to register.

We are proud to feature Dr. Rachel Owen! Dr. Owen has a PhD from the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources and is the Co-Founder of MOST the Missouri Science and Technology Policy Institute, a non-profit organization that places scientifically-trained fellows in the Missouri State Capitol to provide scientific resources for our policymakers. Dr. Owen has been a driving force in launching MOST, securing funding and recruiting fellows. She will be at the capitol all spring to help provide nonpartisan, objective scientific info on bills to the 100th General Assembly! Learn more about her and the great work MOST is doing here!
Meet a Researcher
Jannette Berkley-Patton, Ph.D., is a professor in the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine --Biomedical and Health Informatics Department. She is also the director of the Community Health Research Group, the director of the UMKC Health Equity Institute, and adjunct faculty in the Department of Psychology at UMKC. Her expertise is in using community-engaged approaches to test and disseminate evidence-based health screening and linkage to care interventions focused on HIV/STDs/Hepatitis C, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health in community settings. She is dedicated to engaging students and community-health-academic partnerships along with underserved populations to address health disparities using novel scalable and sustainable methods. She recently spoke at one of our Brews & Breakthroughs. Find out more about her work here!
