Women Writing for (a) Change Cincinnati - January 2020 Newsletter

An Invitation to Write

"Clouds on clouds, in volumes driven. Curtain round the vault of heaven."
~Thomas Love Peacock

January can certainly be a gray, gloomy month. Use that darkness to settle in with your favorite pen, your journal, a cup of something warm and write. Go!

Young Feminist Leadership Academy 2020

The YFLA course helps young women and trans youth develop into strong leaders and doers through a combination of writing, reflection, and discussion, as well as group and individual projects. The four-month course is designed to support and inspire young people to reach for their full potential as feminist leaders in today's society.

YFLA is open to young women and TGNC youth, in grades 8-12, who have previously participated in WWf(a)C programming.

Learn more about YFLA through our FREE information sessions for parents and youth.

Hues of Green, Blue, and
Thank You

The December lull in programming gave us time to beautify the building with fresh coats of paint in the bathrooms on both floors and in the Founder's Room. Special thanks to community members BJ Stahl and Kitrina Covert for their generosity in helping us accomplish this task.

My Word of the Year

It's not something I've done before-choosing a word to anchor the new year with intention.   But this is no ordinary new year; 2020 is special.   As I begin this year as executive director of Women Writing for (a) Change, it feels right to choose a word that can serve as a touchstone for the journey.  My word is  LISTEN .   We do a lot of deep listening here.   My goal is to  listen  to our community and all of its beautiful, wonderful, and unique individuals, many of whom I already know, and others whom I look forward to meeting.  I invite you to reach out to say hello or share your thoughts with me.  Thank you for being part of our community.

Support our community members as they share poems, stories, rants and memories to celebrate our sexuality and enjoin us to fight harassment, abuse, and violence. Each evening will present a different series of readers and content. Join us for one or both of these remarkable performances! All genders (18+) welcome. Held at WWf(a)C.

Proceeds from this event will directly benefit programs, including writing circles, to help victims of domestic abuse in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Diane Debevec Day

On Saturday, January 11th, joyful greetings and touching tributes highlighted the positive impact of Diane Debevec's eight years as executive director at Women Writing for (a) Change. The room was filled with friends from Diane's many years of involvement at WWf(a)C, from the early writing circles she attended, to those she facilitates, and the many with whom she has worked and collaborated along the way.

Silverton Village Manager Tom Carroll started the tributes with a proclamation declaring it Diane Debevec Day! Remarks followed, with words of love and gratitude for Diane's leadership and friendship.  Diane was clearly moved by the outpouring of heartfelt appreciation.

We wish Diane the very best as she transitions to other aspects of her life. Yet we do not say goodbye! Diane will continue to facilitate writing circles and plans to volunteer her time and talent to serve our beloved community!
