October 2019 library news
Ah, October - It's time for the last of our fall colors and then a shift towards those cozy fall activities like reading, crafting, and getting ready for Halloween. We have all those things on our agenda here at the library, too. Read on for some fun new things we're trying this month.

And TONIGHT , if it's not too late for me to let you know, the library and ICORE (Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts) are hosting Ron Bergin from the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) for a discussion of the Community Impact of Silent Sports at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Center. CAMBA is completing its second economic impact study and should have some interesting information to share. All are welcome to the presentation at 7:00 p.m.

See you at the library!

Library director
Community Impact of Silent Sports

The Mercer Library and ICORE will host a discussion of the impact of silent sports trails and infrastructure in the Northwoods. Ron Bergin, Executive director of the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) will give a presentation on the CAMBA trail system and its economic impact on the surrounding communities. Rick Gehring and staff from WinMan Trails will also attend to talk about their trail system and future plans.

This free program will be held on Monday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. (that's today!) in the Mercer Community Center, and is sponsored by ICORE and the Mercer Public Library.
Craft Swap

The Mercer Library will host a Craft Swap on Friday, October 25 at 11:00 a.m. All crafty people know that extra supplies build up quickly — fabric remnants, yarn from that project that you never quite got to, extra coloring and painting materials, and supplies from hobbies you gave up long ago. Find a new home for your extra supplies at the Mercer Library’s Craft Swap.

This will be an informal event on the honor system — bring in some things to contribute and take home things that you can use. Any supplies not claimed at the end of the day will be donated to Goodwill. Please limit the volume of the items you bring so that the library doesn’t have too much stuff to deal with when it’s over!

The library will provide light refreshments, and we hope this will be a fun morning of “shopping” through your friends and neighbors’ supplies. For more information, call the library at 715-476-2366.
Book Club news

After a summer break, the Mercer Book Club is back with a regular scheduled meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. The next meeting will be November 5, when we'll be discussing Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. All are welcome, and copies of the book will be available at the library.

We haven't forgotten about starting an evening book club - it's just been a very busy month for your librarian! We'll plan an initial meeting soon... Stay tuned for more info in my mid-month newsletter, or email [email protected] to make sure you get the schedule if you'd like to join us.
Trunk or Treat - October 31

Mercer students will be trick-or-treating in downtown Mercer on Halloween, Thursday, October 31 at 3:30-5:30 p.m.

The Mercer Library will sponsor its first “Trunk-or-Treat” for Mercer organizations and residents — set up in the library’s parking lot (or inside the library in case of bad weather) and hand out treats to Mercer’s youngest costumed residents. All are welcome to participate, and you can decorate your vehicle in the parking lot, wear a costume, or otherwise get into the Halloween spirit if you like.

We’re especially hoping that some of our area organizations will get involved! If you’d like to set up at the library, please call and let us know you’re coming — 715-476-2366.
Local history: the Brunner Sisters

Join us for our next Mercer History interviews with the Brunner sisters. Margaret (Peg) Brunner, Kathy Kadrlik (née Brunner) and Jean White (née Brunner) will share memories at the Mercer Library on Wednesday, October 23rd at 1:00 p.m. The Brunner name is a well-known one in Mercer’s history, and the sisters will share stories of their father Frank Brunner, who created the first Smokey Bear costume, and of growing up in Mercer in the 20th century. All are welcome to join us and listen in to stories about Mercer's past!
