August 2019 library news
Hope everyone had a happy Loon Day!

Mercer's role in the story of Smokey Bear was recently featured in an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel . I think they did a pretty good job of telling Smokey's story, and the library was happy to provide some photos and information for the article. If you don't know what Mercer has to do with Smokey Bear, be sure to read the story or stop by to take a look at our display of vintage Smokey Bear posters.

Rosemaling is a form of decorative painting that originated in Norway, and we have a nice display of rosemaling pieces by Mercer resident Bill Bayer in our Reading Room display case this month. Take a look - it's beautiful work!

We have a relatively light program schedule this month so that we have time to plan some exciting things for your fall. We're bringing back grown-up story hour and armchair travel talks, planning a collaboration with the Ironwood Theatre's World Fest event, and working on bringing a fantastic exhibit from the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum to Mercer this November.

I'm always eager to hear your ideas for new programs, too. Let me know when you have something you'd like to learn or hear any good program ideas in other places.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Book Sale continues

Our Friends of the Library book sale continues through Saturday 8/10 . It's open during normal library hours, and you can get even better deals with a bag sale on Friday afternoon and Saturday - all the books you can fit in your bag for just $2. There are still lots of great books, and we're still adding more as donations come in.
Grown-Up Story Hour returns

Grown-up Story Hour is back! We'll be at the Liberty Way Tap House on Wednesday, August 21 at 6:00 p.m. Sit back, relax, maybe grab a drink or something to eat, and enjoy an hour of short stories and essays. All are welcome, and there's no charge to attend and no purchase required.

If you'd like to read at Grown-Up Story Hour, call the library at 715-476-2366 or email [email protected] . We can help you find something to read, or you can share some of your favorite short stories or essays with us. It's easy and fun, and I promise the crowd is always friendly!
Fall Celebration - September 21

The Friends of the Mercer Library are planning their 22nd annual Fall Celebration on Saturday, September 21 . Mark your calendar! This is the library's biggest fundraising event of the year, and it's one that the community always looks forward to for good food, wine, "book basket" raffles, auctions, and fun. Tickets will be available later this month.

If you'd like to support the event in addition to buying a ticket, there are a number of ways you can help:
  • Donate items or services for the live and silent auctions.
  • Donate gift certificates.
  • Sponsor the event by making a monetary donation.
  • Donate bottles of fine wine for the wine pull table, an event which generated a lot of excitement last year.
  • Donate a themed book basket for the raffle. (We need 3 more for 2019.)

Contact the library at 715-476-2366 if you have questions.
Internet Skills 201

You're online, you can check your email and do some basic searching, but you're ready to improve your internet skills so you can stay safe and be productive online. Then we have the class for you!

Join librarian Teresa Schmidt on Monday, August 19 at 1:00pm for Internet Skills 201 . This class is FREE and open to everyone with beginner web skills. We'll talk about the differences between Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer (patooey!); share tips on how to recognize and stay away from common online scams; do effective web searching; and more. No registration is required.
American Girl doll raffle

Tickets are still available for the Friends of the Library American Girl Doll raffle! This year's package includes an American Girl Truly Me doll and all the outfits and accessories she needs to enjoy our northwoods winters, including a skating outfit, snowboard, and more. Tickets are available at the library for $5 each or 3/$10. The drawing will be held in September.
