When the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association cancelled the 2020 Day of Service, many members did service projects on their own. We would like to promote how you benefit your local communities throughout the state of Iowa.

Dissolution of Western Nursery & Landscape Association |

A note from the Western Nursery and Landscape Association:
The historic global pandemic has created numerous challenges and great sadness for many. On August 31, 2020 the Board of Directors of the Western Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)6, announced that they had unanimously decided to not have a trade show event in January 2021. The annual Western in Kansas City is the main source of income for the Association and without the income of the 2021 Western, the Board has determined that the non-profit Association cannot be sustained.
A vote of the members of WNLA has been taken and the membership approved of the dissolution of the Western Nursery & Landscape Association. Management of the Association by Sarah Woody Bibens, Woody Bibens & Associates, will end on November 15, 2020.
To celebrate the legacy of the Western Nursery and Landscape Association, the Board of Directors of WNLA is grateful to AmericanHort for stepping up to help celebrate this long legacy. AmericanHort will offer community, membership, and recognition of the WNLA legacy in the following ways:
- Establish the Western-1890 member group inside AmericanHort to help retain the identity and community of WNLA within the industry.
- Facilitate quarterly communications for Western-1890 members (ex. zoom calls, newsletter, company spotlight)
- $189 introductory membership to AmericanHort*
- Work with Western-1890 members to plan industry events in the region as appropriate and available
- Build a permanent legacy for The Western and WNLA by expanding the existing HRI research fund
- Invite representatives from WNLA to attend the HRI reception at Cultivate'21 and dedicate agenda time to celebrate the 130-year history of the organization
- Solicit additional donations to the fund from companies across the industry through asking for pledges that honor the legacy of the WNLA, such as $189 or $1890.

The very minimal remaining assets of WNLA will be transferred to the Kansas Nursery & Landscape Association, a non-profit corporation and long time supporter of the WNLA, and the Horticultural Research Institute to build a permanent legacy for The Western and WNLA by expanding the existing HRI research fund established in 1991.
We are saddened that we will not gather for another Western in Kansas City but the legacy of WNLA can live on if our members and supporters are active in a WNLA community inside AmericanHort, our national association who has done so much for our industry.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available |
|
Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West announced small nonfarm businesses in 16 Iowa counties and neighboring counties in Minnesota and South Dakota are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary counties that began Aug. 18, 2020.
Primary Iowa counties: Clay, Dickinson, Humboldt, Lyon, Osceola and Palo Alto;
Neighboring Iowa counties: Buena Vista, Cherokee, Emmet, Hancock, Kossuth, O’Brien, Pocahontas, Sioux, Webster and Wright;
Neighboring Minnesota counties: Jackson, Nobles and Rock;
Neighboring South Dakota counties: Lincoln and Minnehaha.
Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred.
“Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 3 percent for businesses and 2.75 percent for private nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years and are available to small businesses and most private nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said.
The deadline to apply for economic injury is June 16, 2021.

We are excited to announce that the 65th Annual Iowa State University Shade Tree Short Course (STSC) will still be taking place, but on a virtual platform. There will be more details to come as we continue to plan for this event.
We know many of you use the STSC to earn CEU’s and to prepare yourself for the year ahead. Therefore, we pledge to bring you speakers and topics that will be relevant and important for you to hear and learn from.
Yes, the ISU Shade Tree Short Course will look slightly different this year, but we know you’ll still enjoy and profit from tuning in.
