[Source: Medical X-Press]

Children Learn New Words Like Adults Do, Say Researchers
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

In a series of experiments with children 3 to 5 years old, the researchers found that when children are learning new nouns, they use what they know about these objects-how typical or unusual they are for their categories (such as fish, dog, bird or flower)-to help them figure out what these words mean. This type of sophisticated reasoning was thought to only develop later. The researchers' work appears in the current issue of the Journal of Child Language.

One Therapy Bests Others at Motivating Kids with Autism to Speak
[Source: Science Daily]

Pivotal response treatment involving parents works better than other existing therapies at motivating children with autism and significant speech delays to talk, according to the results of a large study.
Because children with autism are less socially motivated than typically developing children, parents' instincts about how to engage them often don't succeed, said Grace Gengoux, PhD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. PRT gives parents a way to breach this barrier.

New Study Links Same Gene to Both Autism and ADHD
[Source: Science Daily]

Researchers from the national psychiatric project iPSYCH have found that autism and ADHD share changes in the same genes. The new knowledge relates directly to the biological causes of the two child psychiatric disorders.

In Denmark, approximately one per cent of schoolchildren have autism and two to three per cent are diagnosed with ADHD. Autism and ADHD are different developmental disorders, but they can have certain common symptoms. For example, children with autism can demonstrate violent or aggressive behaviour, be impulsive, and have problems

OT Corner: Top 10 Things OTs do with Balloons
[Source:  Miss Mancy]

You know I'm always looking for fun inexpensive and light ways (I travel to schools) to use children's favorite toys and tools to teach important skills. Balloons are one of those magical items that make every child rise to their feet and motivates them to participate!
Here are my TOP 10 Ways that I like using balloons:
  • Play a version of Musical chairs by tapping balloons when music stops whoever doesn't have a balloon sits out. Remove one balloon each time.
  • Great for eye-hand coordination and team building. Children tap the ballon to each other but it can't touch floor.
