Hello Tulita Families!

If you haven’t seen it already, our 2022-23 PTA Executive Board slate is posted in the front office so be sure to check out the nominees. We'll be voting to fill all Board positions at our March 2 Association Meeting.

We are still awaiting updates from RBUSD about how and when we can safely get back on campus to run in-person PTA events and will continue to keep you apprised of changes as soon as we learn of them.

Below are events happening this month. Be sure to check out the Tulita app and attached flyers for additional information.

If so, please nominate them using this form. It is always nice to be appreciated for the precious time that you give to Tulita, so I hope you’ll consider paying it forward by acknowledging someone in our school community. We have two types of awards - an Honorary Service Award (HSA) and a Very Special Person Award (VSP). Please click here for more details about each award. The deadline to submit nominations to the front office is Wednesday, March 16, 2022. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Angela Reynolds, our HSA Chair, at tulitapta.treasurer@gmail.com.

K-5 ELA ADOPTION COMMITTEE UPDATE
Why should parents care about RBUSD’s adoption of a TK-5th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum? Getting our students access to standards-aligned, rigorous learning opportunities, such as a high quality ELA curriculum, are more important than ever as our students readjust to classroom learning. Our kids are faced with significant learning loss after the personal and academic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is teachers utilizing high-quality ELA curriculum can create 4-7 months of additional academic progress for their students, significantly reducing learning loss and closing opportunity gaps.

How do we, as the K-5 ELA Adoption Committee, achieve that goal? The Committee consists of stakeholders from every aspect of RBUSD: parents, teachers in the classroom, special education, and on special assignment, administrators and school board members, focused on a needs-based assessment of the qualities an excellent and rigorous ELA curriculum must have. We’re learning about the science of reading and best practices in literacy instruction, as well as how to evaluate curriculums in the coming months. For a deeper dive into the work of the Committee, click here. Our parent representatives, Jessica and Stacie, look forward to bringing you more information as the adoption process progresses.

·       Black History Month.  Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

·       February 1st - Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year officially begins on February 1st, 2022, and ends on February 11th. The New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2022 is the year of the Tiger; 2021 was the year of the Ox. Most people think that honoring the Lunar New Year is just a Chinese tradition, but it’s an event that’s celebrated in many countries in Asia and the celebrations are as colorfully similar as they are diverse.

·       February 4th – World Cancer Day.

·       February 7th  Go Red for Women Day (part of American Heart Month).

·       February 12th— President Lincoln's Birthday.

·       February 15th— Parinirvana Day (Buddhist).  Parinirvana Day, or Nirvana Day is a Mahayana Buddhist holiday celebrated in East Asia. This day marks the death of the Buddha and is celebrated as Buddhists believe that having attained Enlightenment, Buddha achieved freedom from physical existence and its sufferings. Buddhists celebrate Parinirvana Day by meditating or by going to Buddhist temples or monasteries. As with other Buddhist festivals, celebrations vary throughout the world.

·       February 16th — Makha Bucha Day (Thai Buddhist).  Māgha Pūjā is the second most important Buddhist festival, celebrated on the full moon day of the third lunar month in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Sri Lanka and on the full moon day of Tabaung in Myanmar.

·       February 16th Susan B. Anthony Day.  Susan B. Anthony Day is a commemorative holiday to celebrate the birth of Susan B. Anthony and women's suffrage in the United States.

·       February 17th  Random Acts of Kindness Day.

·       February 20th  World Day of Social Justice.  An international day recognizing the need to promote social justice, which includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights, and social protections.

·       February 25th through March 1st— Festival of Ayyam-I-Ha (Baha'i). The Baháʼí Faith is a religion teaching the essential worth of all religions and the unity of all people. Established by Baháʼu'lláh in the 19th century, it initially developed in Iran and parts of the Middle East. Members of the Baha’i tradition celebrate Ayyám-i-Há, or “Days of Ha." These days are devoted to spiritual preparation for the month-longfast, Alá, that follows. These days are festive times in the community, characterized by hospitality, charity, service and gift-giving.
