Aurora's new mayor and council

A new mayor, three new city council members and two incumbents were sworn in Dec. 2 following their election to office in November.

Newly elected Mayor Mike Coffman, Ward IV Council Member Juan Marcano, Ward V Council Member Alison Coombs, At-Large Council Member Curtis Gardner, along with Ward VI Council Member Françoise Bergan and At-Large Council Member Angela Lawson, who retained their seats, joined Ward I Council Member Crystal Murillo, Ward II Council Member Nicole Johnston, Ward III Council Member Marsha Berzins, At-Large Council Member Dave Gruber and At-Large Council Member Allison Hiltz on the council. Johnston also was appointed as Mayor Pro Tem.

Festival of Wreaths bidding ends Friday, Dec. 6

The 20th Annual Festival of Wreaths is wrapping up Friday, Dec. 6, so get your bids in now before it's too late. All proceeds support exhibits and education programs at the Aurora History Museum and Historic Sites.

Holiday celebrations abound in Aurora
Looking for a way to get in the spirit of the holiday season? You'll find everything you could want right here in Aurora.

Stop by the DeLaney Farm Historic District, 170 S. Chambers Road, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8, for the free Holidays at the Farm, with games, history and a hot chocolate bar.

If you have a pet, check out Pet Pics with Santa Claws from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Nick's Garden Center, 2001 S. Chambers Road. It's just $10 for a digital photo with Santa, and the event supports the Aurora Animal Shelter.

For a chance to give back, visit the Stocking Stuffing Party at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Aurora Central Library, 14949 E. Alameda Parkway, and help stuff stockings for families in need.

Next weekend, enjoy the holiday spirit with pioneer-style crafts, snacks and a special wagon ride next to a certain someone from the North Pole at Prairie Rides with Santa from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Plains Conservation Center, 21901 E. Hampden Ave. It's $10 per person, and all ages are welcome. Visit the link to register for a time slot.

Visit another of Aurora's historic sites when the Centennial House, an 1891 Fletcher home, hosts a Holiday Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at 1671 Galena St. Enjoy a free, self-guided tour, along with cookies.

If you can break for lunch, the Aurora History Museum, 15051 E. Alameda Parkway, is hosting Christmas with the Browns for its Lunch and Learn Series from noon to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. Bring your lunch, and enjoy a presentation from the Molly Brown House Museum about the joys and traditions of a Victorian Christmas. The cost is $4 ($3 for Aurora residents).

Festival of Wreaths
Through Dec. 6
This year’s 20th Annual Festival of Wreaths display and fundraiser event features wreaths generously sponsored and decorated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. Wreaths will be on display at the Aurora History Museum, Aurora Municipal Center, Town Center at Aurora and Stanley Marketplace for people to enjoy while an online bidding will take place. Proceeds benefit the Aurora History Museum.

Holidays on the Farm
Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8, 9 a.m. to noon
Celebrate the holidays with a glimpse into Aurora's past. Enjoy games, history and a hot chocolate bar with fix-ins donated by Savory Spice Shop. Free admission .

Pet Pics with Santa Claws
Saturday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get your pet's photo taken with Santa at this annual event supporting the Aurora Animal Shelter. $10 for a digital photo, with a printed photo provided at no extra cost upon request. The shelter will also be accepting cash donations and in-kind donations of pet toys, treats and supplies. No appointment necessary.

MLK Art, Poetry and Essay Contest
