A Message from Headmaster Philabaum

Greetings families,

First, earlier today I sent an email charting out a vision for the final quarter we have together at Archway Trivium East. If you did not already see it, please take a moment to read the communication here so you can know how we will be finishing the year together! It contains important save the date information on particular events, as well as communication information about our transition.

I would like to take a moment to share some thoughts on one of the most important principles we hold dear at this academy – we become what we behold. There is a reason that we are so intentional about the books that our children read in class, about what we hang or don’t hang on our walls, about what language we model and encourage, and most importantly, about the character of the individuals who stand in front of your children as teachers every day. What we immerse our ourselves in becomes a part of us. What we give our attention to necessarily impresses itself upon us. We unconsciously instill habits, develop our desires, and even have our values shaped through the things we spend our time with. When we surround our students in an environment that is elevating and dignifying, they are elevated and dignified.

I have spoken to some of our older students about this principle recently. There are so many influences fighting for the minds and the hearts of our children. Countless industries and companies, through social media and entertainment (even through books!), are fighting to capture the attention of these impressionable young souls. There is, undoubtedly, good content out there. But more often than not, these industries appeal to our lesser nature rather than call us to our highest selves. The attainment of virtue is not easy or quick, and thus, it is not as easily packaged and consumed. True excellence, true goodness, is gritty and takes sacrifice; it is not shiny and it is not often immediately gratifying.

There can be found some elements in popular culture that will one day become a part of the classical canon – things that are nutrient dense and lasting. Predominantly, most are more like junk food – they can be enjoyed in context and with discretion. However, there are elements in popular culture that are more like poison – and those should be kept as far away from our children as possible. These elements can sneak their way into media and literature and games that are marketed to our children. As much as we seek to keep this our school and our homes a sanctuary, it requires constant vigilance on our part to guard the hearts of our children from the forces that care not for their hearts.

As a school, we have recently addressed the sort of books that are brought into our campus and the sorts of conversations they are having with friends that have been influenced by social media. Our handbook states that students should not bring pop culture books into our classes, even for independent reading. This is not because, as we stated, there is not rich content to be found that is currently being produced. It is because we must err on the side of caution, to protect our sanctuary from content that can be destructive, and to intentionally immerse our students in content that we know to be elevating. Additionally, we have asked that students refrain from bringing graphic novels of any kind on campus. We have discovered that many harmful and dark themes, words, and images can be found within these books, and we do not want to put the burden on teachers to have to sift through these materials to pre-vet them. We ask that students bring the kinds of books that can be found in their teacher’s classroom library – classic children’s books, Newberry Medal winners, and content-rich non-fiction. We ask for your support and partnership in this as you see your children packing up their items before school. If you have any questions at all about what kind of books can be brought onto campus, or would like to discuss this further, please reach out to me at any time!

One classic quote comes to mind, from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” This captures well the classical method – to find the most beautiful and good of things, and to immerse our students in these things every day. We become what we behold.

Thank you for your partnership as we continue, even in our final months, to guard and protect the special sanctuary we have built over the years, and to guard and protect the hearts of our scholars.

With Devotion,

Stephen Philabaum
Headmaster

Future Roosevelt Communication

As stated, moving forward we will begin sending two distinct forms of communication. For communication purposes, we will continue the Athenian Echo through the remainder of the school year for all families. The content will be focused on this school year and finishing well together. Now that re-enrollment is coming to a close, after today, we will remove the “Roosevelt Review” section of the Athenian Echo, and begin sending a separate newsletter to all families who are registered to join us at Archway Roosevelt. This way, everyone can focus on the information that is relevant to you as a family.

Spring 2022 State Testing Schedule for 3rd-5th Grades

State testing begins next week and continues throughout April. Please see the attached schedule for the date that your student will be participating in the test. The evening prior to your student’s test, they will not be assigned homework so that they are well rested for testing day! Please be sure they have a good healthy breakfast and are at school on time. Testing begins promptly at 8AM so it is very important that all students arrive to school no later than 7:50AM. We also ask that you do not schedule appointments or sign them out of school that day. If they leave campus, they will not be allowed to complete their test when they return. Although testing is scheduled from 8AM -10am, students are allowed the entire day to complete their test so some students will be testing until dismissal.

Student will need to bring a set of earbuds to use during testing throughout April. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions!

Health Office Update

As we are entering full swing into the cold and flu season, I would like to provide some updates regarding student health. We do ask that you please do not send your scholars to school when they are sick.

In order to prevent the spread of illness, scholars will be sent home if they present with excessive coughing, sore throat, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea. Please plan to pick up your scholar as soon as possible or within one hour if you do receive a call. If your scholar is sent home from school due to illness, they should not return until they have completed 24 hours symptom free.

Please notify the Health Office of any changes that arise with your scholar's health status, such as: new diagnosis, new medications, surgery or hospitalizations, factures or injuries and communicable diseases in the scholar or their immediate family.

For those interested in supporting the health office through donations, we are in need of water bottles, granola bars, and cracker donations!

Thank you for your support in keeping our campus healthy and safe!
