Does Florida Require E-Verify?

No, not yet.  But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing the 2020 Florida legislature to pass legislation to require all Florida employers to use the federal E-Verify system.  If your company has a qualifying contract with the State of Florida, all new hires working on the contract must be screened using E-Verify.  (more answers about E-verify)

On Dec. 31. 2019, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued the 2020 optional standard mileage rates, which are used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.  Beginning on January 1, 2020, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be: (1)  57.5 cents per mile driven for business use (down from 58 cents in 2019); (2)  17 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes (down from 20 cents in 2019); and (3)  14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations (unchanged).  Click for the details .

Unpaid Medical Leave Must be Offered to Employee with Medical Problems

Pest and landscape company Massey Services will pay $63,000 (and make policy changes) to settle an employment discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC alleged that the company denied an employee's request for medical leave, fired her after learning of her medical condition, and later failed to rehire her even though her previous position was still vacant. The company denied the employee's leave of absence request after she was hospitalized for her disability.  To settle the case, the company agreed to modify its leave policies and provide unpaid medical leave as a form of reasonable accommodation.  The company also agreed to train its staff on the ADA and the obligation to provide reasonable accommodations.  Lesson learned - an unpaid leave of absence must be provided to an employee with medical condition(s) unless doing so would result in an undue hardship   Click for the details.
