2020, HERE WE COME!

We are ready to launch into our 2020 activities, but first I want to thank the TSS team (staff and Board) for executing a flurry of activities to end the year: our annual holiday pie and cookie sale, graduation of the first Lovin' Oven Culinary Academy (LOCA) cohort, impressive bike sales at Operation Bicycle, and our first Teen Appreciation Holiday Dinner, to name a few. I agreed to be locked in an Escape Room with all the staff as a team-building gift from our Board, and we had an extraordinary training on Trauma Informed Care and Toxic Stress Reduction by Hanna Institute. We enjoyed hosting Chuck and Cathy Williamson and their guests for our first Dinner for 8 featuring LOCA graduates and Chef Paloma. We proudly shared highlights of 2018-2019 in the Annual Report beautifully designed by Holly Sorkin who serves on the TSS Communications Committee.

All in all, it was a good end to the year, made even better by the generous gifts from all of you. Rest assured that we will put those donations to good use as we gear up for all our programs and activities in 2020. We look forward to new opportunities to employ teens and empower dreams!

Thank you so much,

CONGRATULATIONS ARE DUE TO OUR FIRST LOCA GRADUATES

Chef Paloma (far right) with 3 LOCA graduates: Ashley, Sean, and Emma

Smiles combined with hard work were two key ingredients of each class of the Lovin' Oven Culinary Academy, known affectionately as LOCA.  Students completed 30 hours of in-depth instruction that included ServSafe food handler certification, knife skills, commercial kitchen/equipment basics, cooking techniques, and front-of-house hospitality training. The final exam = preparation and serving of a meal to friends and family followed by a celebration at which each student received a Culinary Certification, a $100 stipend, and a chef's knife. They can now look forward to interviews with local restaurants and caterers and will be hired by Teen Services to cater events.

Congratulations are due to our first LOCA graduates: Ashley Christian, Brianna Gutierrez, Jazmin Rodriguez, Emma Stambaugh, and Sean Tomany. Way to go LOCA students!

LOCA was launched in October thanks to a generous gift from Chuck and Cathy Williamson. Additional support has been received from Barbara Talbott and John Riley, Wells Fargo, Miranda Lux Foundation, and Rose Marie Piper Foundation.
TEEN SERVICES WELCOMES MARY CLARK JANIS TO THE BOARD

The TSS Board is happy to announce that Mary Clark Janis has joined our board. With already close ties and interest in LOCA and other Lovin' Oven activities plus experience in event planning and a terrific sense of humor, Mary Clark will fit right in with the organization and the board.

Mary Clark Janis began her professional life as an elementary classroom teacher in Virginia, but eventually moved into advertising and then event-planning. In 2008 she purchased a house in Glen Ellen as a vacation home, but after designing and completing an extensive remodel, decided to make it her primary residence. Since then she and her business partners have done several major remodeling projects in the Sonoma Valley. Mary Clark supervises her family's foundation and is very mindful of the needs and challenges of nonprofits in Sonoma Valley. She is an active member of Impact100 Sonoma.

Other board changes: Regretfully, Tammy Samut is cycling off the board, and she will be sorely missed. Not only did she bring her expertise in event planning to our Cowboy Cab fundraiser every year, she also brought TSS up-to-date on technology issues, added fresh perspectives to our conversations, and kept us all smiling.

In addition, Doug Hanford will become Past President, Judy Scotchmoor will continue as President, and Sydney Randazzo will serve as Vice President. The 2020 TSS Board is looking forward to another banner year for Teen Services.
A NEW FACE WELCOMES TEENS TO THE TEEN CENTER

Sandra Santiago - Teen Center Coordinator

Sandra was born in Los Angeles and raised in northern Virginia where she attended a teen center service that helped shape her views growing up. While she was in high school, she worked with preschoolers but eventually started a career in the financial industry in which she worked for six years. More recently, she drove across the country to move back to California and went to school to receive her cosmetology license. Sandra is extremely excited to join the Teen Services Sonoma team where she hopes to inspire and encourage our teens to aim high and dream big.
OTHER NEWS AT TEEN SERVICES SONOMA

A Magical Night at the Teen Center

LOCA Dinner for 8 at the Teen Center

The comfy old sofa and the cumbersome (but popular) foosball table were temporarily stashed in the classroom. Teens had hung additional lights along the wall; the table was set; soft music played in the background; and oh my - the delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen... The end result felt like a cozy nook in the best of restaurants as we greeted our guests at the first-ever LOCA Dinner for 8.

Teen Services was delighted to invite Chuck and Cathy Williamson and their friends to partake in this event. Chef Paloma prepared an extraordinary menu assisted by LOCA graduate, Sean Tomany. Our thanks to Hafner Vineyards for the donated wines and to Barry and Barbara Ganley for glasses and flatware.

Holiday cookies and pies

Thanks to Chef Paloma and volunteers (young and slightly more mature) and all of you, we sold 182 pies and 17 dozen cookies. We raised a record amount from this year's sale, due to Chef Paloma's bargaining ability in keeping costs low, and the many volunteers who chopped, measured, baked and boxed our delicious creations.

In addition, we had great fun decorating holiday cookies under the guidance of our cookie guru, Amy Hunsberger. Thank you, Amy!!

New Grants for Teen Services

We are pleased to announce the receipt of grants supporting our Ready to Work activities: $5,000 from Wells Fargo and $10,000 from Miranda Lux Foundation for LOCA, $10,000 from Rose Marie Piper Foundation to support both LOCA and Team Building for Teens, and $25,000 from the Jonas Family Foundation for general support. We are so grateful for their support.

In addition, we received a $5,000 Pop Up Creativity Grant from Creative Sonoma, County of Sonoma and $2,500 from Sonoma Plein Air Foundation in support of an exciting new team-building project: The Tree of Possibilities. Stay tuned for more information about this project and to follow its progress.

Our Wish for the Month
Along with the addition of LOCA and new cookie customers has come more laundry! Regretfully our washer/dryer is unable to keep up with demand. We have limited space, but a big need. If you can help us, please contact Joelynn. Thank you!
