AAVN Newsletter June 2021
A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

It is a great honor to be serving as your President for the 2021-2023 term. I am looking forward to working with our new (see more details below) and returning Board members.

One of the hallmarks of the AAVN is our committed cadre of volunteers. I would like to thank a few of the amazing individuals now:

  • My predecessor, Dr. Martha Cline, for her commitment to the AAVN. Martha has done a fantastic job leading the organization during the past two years and we are incredibly grateful for her service. I’m happy to report that she will continue on the Executive Board, in the role of Past President, for two more years
  • Our outgoing Board members, Amanda Ardente, Rebecca Mullis and Korinn Saker
  • All who served on a committee during the past two years
  • Kara Burns, Korinn Saker, Ken Lambrecht and Martha Cline for serving as moderators for the 2021 Symposium
  • Lauren Pagliughi, Jackie Parr and Martha Cline for organizing and hosting the student sessions
  • Martha Cline and Becky Mullis for an awesome trivia night

If you are interested in learning more about /serving on a committee, please email us at aavnexecutive@gmail.com

She completed her residency training in 2007 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) that same year. Dr. Weeth has been in specialty practice offering in-person or telemedicine nutrition consultations since Fall 2007. 2021 Symposium Summary

The AAVN Clinical Nutrition & Research Symposium and Annual Business Meeting were held virtually over a two-day period on June 2nd and 3rd. 230+ attendees were able to watch and listen simultaneously from ten countries around the world.

20 research abstracts and four excellent keynote presentations were delivered this year, and 4-hours of RACE approved CE credit was available. Dr. Liara Gonzalez shared her research on intestinal permeability; Dr. David Dzanis took attendees on a 30-year odyssey of US pet food regulations; Dr. Michael Power reviewed the evolution of milk in various species, and Dr. Greg Aldrich discussed alternative protein sources for pet food.

The program included Q&A sessions following each keynote speaker and research presenter, a re-cap roundtable for student attendees, raffle prizes, and a trivia night. Many attendees were fully vaccinated by the time the Symposium was held, which offered the ability for a handful of ‘viewing parties’. Recordings of the presentations will be available soon to Symposium registrants.

We could not have delivered this Symposium without the herculean, volunteer efforts of your AAVN Board members and our committed and generous sponsors (see below).

An evaluation survey was distributed to seek feedback from all participants. Your thoughts are vital in helping the new AAVN Board plan for next year’s meeting. More than anything, the organizers are always interested in getting names of potential keynote speakers, so please reach out via email to aavnexecutive@gmail.com if you have suggestions!
