Letter from the President
The AGASC had another very active year. We sponsored all the following events:
* Two general meetings, first at Pat Warren's Studio and second one at Kathleen Mitchell's studio. At the second meeting we had a Venetian glass goblet demonstration.
* Tour of Coatings by Sandberg in February
* Tour of Austin Art Projects and Palm Springs Art Museum "Favorite Things: Glass from the Collection of Arlene and Harold Schnitzer" in March
* Tours of two north county glass blowing studios in April, Paul Counts and James Stone
* Tour of Tim Harlan's glass studio in May
* Lost wax casting and mold making workshop by Stephen Edwards in June
* Two cold working workshops by Stephanie Close in June and October
* Our Gallery 21 Annual Exhibition in September
* And our very popular annual Holiday party coming this December. Do not miss it.
I want to also give a big thank you to this years sponsors of our Art Glass Association of Southern California 38th Annual Members Exhibition. Oceanside Glass and Tile and Coatings by Sandberg were again sponsors of special categories in the show. The sponsors who donated prizes for the winners were: The Glass Orchid, Glass Accessories International (Toyo), His Glassworks, Rayzist Photomask, and Pacific Art Glass.
As President, I want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the many events we will be sponsoring in the upcoming year. All of our activities are open to the general public so we can promote the glass arts.
Our first general meeting for next year will be held on Sunday, January 19th at Pat Warren's Studio, 3-5pm. It is an important meeting where committees are formed that decide the next year's activities. So, be sure and make this meeting.
Looking forward to another great year,
Jack Wade

AGASC 38th Annual Members' Exhibition
and Glass Boutique
By Jon Simpson
The members really upped their game for this year's exhibition. The quality of the artwork was superb and the show looked amazing. Sales in the glass boutique were exceptionally strong surpassing those of the artwork in the main gallery for the first time and totaling more than last year. This is more amazing when taking into account that the show ran only for a total of ten days. There were 32 artists represented in the exhibition and 12 in the glass boutique. The total number of entries in the show was 83.
We would like to thank our show sponsors: Oceanside Glass & Tile and Coatings by Sandberg, Inc. for their continued support of our exhibition. Also, the following companies donated glass, tools, supplies and gift certificates for awards in the show: His Glass Works, Glass Accessories International (Toyo), Rayzist Photomask, Pacific Art Glass and the Glass Orchid.
It takes an awful lot to put on the exhibition and Krista Heron and Gail Richardson, Show Chairs and I would like to thank all of the volunteers, participants and raffle donors. We would particularly like to thank Rosemary Stark for coordinating the raffle. Devora Safran for catering the reception with exceptional food. Jackie Murphy for her IT skills for the show and boutique. Cathy Coverley and Kathleen Mitchell for hanging and displaying the exhibition and Connie Govier for coordinating the glass boutique. It takes a village to put on the exhibition!

The Second Coldworking Workshop
With Stephanie Close
The AGASC sponsored a wonderful 2-day cold working workshop for five people in October at Tom Marosz' well-furnished Studio in Spring Valley with Stephanie Close. With help from both Tom and Stephanie, we learned to use the sandblaster (and finish off or seal the sandblasted area with Liquid Luster or 511), the diamond saw, the wet belt sander, polisher, flat lap and alpha grinder. We brought in some of our creations that just needed a bit of cold working (or perhaps a lot) to make them look more appealing and professional.
I still think it's unbelievable that they were able to work individually with all of us to cold work so many of our creations within the two days. I now feel competent enough to rent studio time from them for other creations as necessary. And for the really challenging pieces, I know that Stephanie is available for hire and does amazing work. I believe AGA will be offering more of these cold working workshops in the future and you'll want to schedule a weekend to learn how to improve your creations like I did.

Cathy Coverley's Explorations in Glass XLV
Cathy Coverley celebrated her 45 years as a glass artist with an exhibit at the Pt. Loma Hervey Library, 3701 Voltaire St., San Diego CA 92107. The show runs from September 5 - December 31, 2019. The show includes her travel photography and her glass sculptures and stained glass, representing "Earth, Air, Fire and Water", illustrating those elements as they appear in nature.
These photos were taken at the opening reception on September 28th. Everything looks so much better than my photography. It's a beautiful show and testament to one of my favorite glass artists and teachers.

Fallbrook Galaxy of Glass 2019
'The Galaxy of Glass' at the Janice Griffins Gallery at Fallbrook Center for the Arts is Southern California's Largest Glass exhibit and offers a wonderful venue for our members to showcase their work. It is an annual event in September and October. This professional show draws collectors and art patrons with its spacious well lit gallery.
|
Talmadge Art Show
Several glass artists were featured at the Talmadge Art Fair in Liberty Station. This is an annual arts and crafts show in San Diego that has grown considerably in the last few years.
