Hello Secondary Families!
Hello Secondary families! It's been so great to see the student and staff faces this week, after being on break. Upon our return last Monday, it was important to acknowledge two significant events in the national and international news. Staff returned prepared to support students with this news:

First was Russia's invasion of Ukraine. We worked to ensure that students’ questions were answered and they had an understanding of what was happening. We validated students feeling safe and secure at school, while knowing it is important that they understand what is happening in the world. We acknowledged that there are varying perspectives and varying experiences related with the crisis in Russia and Ukraine. Please see more resources below:
Anna ran a middle school community meeting about how to take action and support our national and global communities. Students rotated through three stations doing activities to support Texas and Florida, Ukraine, and our environment.
The other event in the national news last week was the announcement from Texas that families who supported transgender youth would be considered abusive. Again, the staff at TLC are committed to making sure students feel safe and supported. We are committed to giving students stability and maintaining partnership with families. Here are some of the resources our staff is we're using:
I want to recognize the efforts of Secondary staff this week to show students that they are safe, brave, and supported in their learning and their environment. Staff used a variety of resources to help guide these discussions and share information with students, and I hope that you might enjoy also taking a look at some of these resources.

Families should have all received access to Skyward by now, as announced last Friday, and students have access as well. This week we are aware of some technical issues with the student access that we have been working to resolve. Students will work with their following teacher to learn how to navigate the Skyward system. Some students have also been wrapping up MAP testing with their following teachers this week.

I want to share some information related with our middle school. All middle school students have Advisory class during Block E with their following teacher and other students. Advisory is a time when explicit Social Emotional skills are explored, taught, and practiced. Each month, student focus on a different skill. This year, students have learned about and practiced empathy, mindset, accessibility, equity, cooperation, assertiveness, and responsibility. In March, students will learn about relationships including boundaries, healthy and unhealthy relationships, and behaviors that interfere with relationships including bullying. In upcoming months, students will also learn about self control, perseverance, and resilience. By introducing these skills in Advisory, teachers and students are able to apply and practice using them in academic and social activities throughout the day and school year.

As always, please keep in touch with me or your child’s following teacher. Have a great weekend!

Family ASL Classes Begin March 14
Our campus prides itself on supporting a language-rich environment for our students and staff. Gaining even basic knowledge of ASL is critical to build strong relationships in the home, communicate with your child, and support their academic, social and emotional needs. We hope you will consider signing up for our classes to enrich your ASL fluency and support your child at home.

Sadly, language deprivation is too common for deaf youth and adolescents. A 2017 article from Boston University cites that 90-95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who don’t know ASL and do not learn the language before the child begins school. Even after the student has enrolled in a school, only 40% of families are using ASL in the home.

Our Spring 2022 Family/Caregiver ASL Classes will again offer a Level I and a Level II class.

We have two options for Level I class and two options for Level II class. When you fill out your registration form, please choose the option that works best for you. Each class does require a minimum number of attendees, so we will reach out to all of you with additional information once we have a better idea if both class times can be filled.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Carla Del Pizzo.
Thank you!
