Parents and Guardians,
I hope you and your student had a good transition back to school last week. The first week of any semester can be challenging, but I hope you and your student are getting back into a routine.
Today has been a difficult day for many students and staff as we mourn the loss of 10th grader Bethany McTee. The district shared an email yesterday with information about her passing, and Counselors have been working to support our campus today. Please let us know if your student needs anything during this time so we can continue to support them.
As a reminder, next Monday, January 18th, LISD will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Please take a few minutes to review the rest of the information that can be found below in this email. We will continue to update the schedule and information throughout the semester.
Sincerely,
Chris Mayfield
Principal

Varsity Girls Soccer
On Thursday, Varsity won their first game of the season 4-0 vs. Arlington Heights. Freshman, Kate Carlson, opened the scoring for the Leopards and freshman, Taylor Person, scored a hat trick. Assists were by Maya Hignite, Hannah Dunlap (2), and Natalia Duran De La Vega.
In their first game on Friday, the girls beat Denton Ryan 5-0. Goals were scored by Hannah Dunlap (hat trick), Jordan Watson, and Avery Templin. Assists were by Taylor Person (3), Jordan Watson, and Kate Carlson. In their second game on Friday, the girls beat a tough Argyle side 2-0. Both goals were scored by Taylor Person with one assist coming from Hannah Dunlap.
After three wins in group play the team qualified for the semifinals vs. Colleyville Heritage. Taylor Person scored a goal that was assisted by Hannah Dunlap to go up 1-0 in the second half. Unfortunately, the Leopards couldn't finish them off and Colleyville scored two goals to qualify for the final.
Overall, it was a great tournament for the team. Big shoutout to all the players who play in the back and earned three clean sheets in four games: Amiya Callicutt, Jordan Watson, Natalie Reyna, Callan Snider, Hailey Downing, Katie Irby, Abby Wood, Lexie Schuttee, Avery Templin, and Natalia Duran De La Vega. The Leopards play in the Colleyville Heritage Tournament starting this Thursday, 1/14.

Varsity Boys Soccer
This past weekend the boys varsity team participated in the Forney Kickoff Classic Tournament. In group play the Leopards defeated Seagoville (1-0), North Lamar (9-0), and Corsicana (4-0). With the three wins the Leopards advanced to the 1st place game versus Tyler Legacy. In the final the boys were up 1-0 in the first half with the goal scored by captain Michael Myers. In the second half Tyler Legacy scored on a penalty kick. The only goal conceded by Lovejoy in the tournament. With a tie at the end of regulation it was now time for penalty kicks. Leopard goalkeeper Sammy Merrick made three saves in the penalty shootout but unfortunately the Leopards lost. The Lovejoy community should be proud of how the boys conducted themselves on and off the pitch and represented with pride.

Dawton Bruner, an LHS Sophomore and member of Troop 224, made the most of his 2020 year. Along with school and sports, he recently completed his Eagle Scout Project. With some of the materials donated from Tower Extrusions in Wylie, Texas, Dawton custom-built the forest green table for the Lucas Fire Department. It displays several plaques with the Shifts, donors, a thank you message, and the Bible verse Isaiah 43:2 engraved on them. The words “In Honor of Our Hometown Heroes” can be found on an engraved plate in the center of the table. Dawton believes the Fire Department is a very worthy group to be honored and appreciated.
On December 7, 2020, Pearl Harbor Day, Dawton Bruner achieved the Rank of Eagle Scout, this being the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. The evening ended with the new Eagle Scout Bruner retiring several American Flags. One very special American Flag had been flown over Pearl Harbor in June 2006 in honor of Aviation Radioman 1st class Petty Officer James Elvin Sellers, a WWII veteran. Mr. Sellers served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. He was the father of Mrs. Janet Tillman, a much loved and retired Lovejoy ISD Librarian, whom we would like to thank for entrusting us with this honor.
