rosacea month april 2022.jpg

The National Rosacea Society (NRS) designates April as

Rosacea Awareness Month

The Rosacea Society is dedicated to

educate on the impact of this chronic

facial skin disorder, affecting nearly

16 million Americans.

The earliest signs of rosacea are often overlooked because people assume the

"flare" is temporary & will go away.

Unfortunately, without treatment

effects of rosacea often persist & may become increasingly severe.

What is Rosacea?

Seeing red is never a good thing, especially when it comes to your complexion!

Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition.

Who gets Rosacea?

Rosacea is most commonly found in people with fair skin. Signs & symptoms include warm-feeling, dry, or swollen skin, a dusky brown discoloration & acne-like breakouts.

Tips for Managing Rosacea?

The true root cause of rosacea is unknown. It's a systemic, inflammatory skin disease for which there is no known cure. Get your skin to a much better place by working with a professional, identifying your triggers, and building the right skincare routine.

See a Dermatologist!

Having worked with several rosacea patients, I'm happy to share tips to help you manage your rosacea. My first though...see a dermatologist to confirm that you’re dealing with rosacea and not something else.!

Know your Triggers!

When it comes to rosacea management, I can’t stress this enough:

Learn. Identify. Know. Your. Triggers.

Here's many well-known triggers:

·    Sun exposure

·    Emotional stress

·    Wind

·    Heat [weather, baths, showers, saunas, hot tubs]

·    Alcohol & Spicy foods

·    Exercise

·    Some skincare ingredients/medications

Because it’s so individual, become your own skin detective! I recommend keeping a journal to help identify your personal triggers to identify patterns. Once you do you’ll be a step closer to clearer, calmer skin.

Build a Routine & Stick to it!

You’ll want to avoid product hopping, so it's important to build a consistent routine with the right products.

Tips for Building a Routine for

Managing Rosacea

1. Cleanse gently, every day

This means both morning & evening.

Use a simple, creamy (sulfate-free) cleanser. You may want to try my new products: Power Pink Balancing Cleanser or Luxurious Creamy Wash!

2. NEVER skip sun protection!

Use a broad-spectrum PHYSICAL sunscreen every day!  I recommend Skinfiniti Ultamatte, AlumierMD's Clear Shield or Moisture Matte.

3. Exfoliate ~carefully!

Removing dead cell buildup from the skin will balance your moisture barrier to help reduce flare-ups. But, proceed with caution & find the right product for your skin. Consider my new product: Slough-Away! - a gentle exfoliating powder.

4. Hydrate

As is the case with pretty much any skin condition, maintaining a healthy moisture barrier is key. Drink your water please!

You Are What You Eat!

What you put into your mouth is as important as your skincare routine!

Eating highly processed or “junk” food effects your skin & lacking attention to what you eat, will influence the

behavior of your skin.

Fruit & Vegetables:

Eating fruits & vegetables daily cannot be overemphasized. They contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect skin from cellular damage caused by free radicals. These foods contain a multitude of vitamins & minerals needed to support the immune system, promote radiant skin and heal blemishes properly.

Balanced diet

Choosing healthy carbs, proteins & fruits & vegetables will achieve healthy skin.

Avoid crash diets as they are short in essential vitamins & minerals.

Lots of water

Your skin needs internal moisture to stay flexible & flush out toxins. Dehydration will cause your skin to look dry, tired & slightly grey. Tip: divide your weight in half: this is your daily (oz) intake water. You can also switch it up with Green tea which contains antioxidants & vitamin B3.

Treat your skin kindly!

Here are 6 great foods to help your skin stay clear & bright.

Kale & Spinach

Influence skin elasticity & are important when it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage.

Berries & Citrus

Filled with antioxidants & fibre to help keep collagen production strong & skin soft while playing a role in toxin removal from the body.

Walnuts & Pistachios

A good source of vitamins B & E to help fight free radicals & the oxidation process that leads to aging of the skin.

Almond Milk

Helps your skin by boosting the production of collagen & contains manganese which helps protect the skin from UV rays.

Apples

Contain melanin producing copper & Vitamin C to promote collagen production.

Sweet Potatoes:

Beta carotene helps generate new skin cells to promote a natural healthy glow.

Ingredients to Avoid:

There can be tons of different triggers for rosacea, but I want to touch on skincare ingredients for a moment. Everyone is very different, but I’ve noticed these ingredients can cause negative reaction:

  • Fragrance (synthetic & natural = essential oils)
  • Drying alcohols (denatured & isopropyl alcohol)
  • Sulfates (Found in some cleansers)
  • Circulation-boosting extracts (mint, ginseng, & vitamin B12)
  • L-ascorbic acid i.e. Vitamin C. Use encapsulated, time releasing serums.
  • Sulfites / Nitrites (food additives)

Note: Be very careful & avoid active microdermabrasion facial treatments that uses suction.

I know keeping rosacea under control can feel like an uphill battle.

But, I’ve seen many clients significantly improve their skin by diligently following these tips!

Hard work pays off, and clearer, calmer skin is definitely possible.

Always know I am just a consult away!
