64 SECONDS to Learn Up To 25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
September 4, 2020
From the Interim Principal

Greetings SLP Community,

We are ready to welcome each student to SLP (either virtually or in-person) on Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9 for their one-on-one Park Connections meetings. Teachers are scheduled from 8:00 - 4:00 each day. We are so excited to meet your students! Our new distance learning instructional schedule begins Thursday, the 10th, at 8:25 a.m. School ends at 3:15 and students are expected to log into each class period with their teachers. Live, synchronous instruction takes place alternately by hour with asynchronous support, check-ins, review, and small group work.

Each teacher has placed textbooks, calculators, and other necessary materials into 1,502 individual boxes, one for each of our students. Students who need computer devices must go to the Media Center to check out their device. Computers were not placed in boxes. Each box has been delivered to your child’s Park Connections classroom. In order to prepare for the distribution of these boxes and get all items bar-coded and scanned, we called on our parent volunteers and students, and they got it done! It was a monumental task! It modeled the amazing community support for our school, and we are so grateful. We also appreciated the many students who came and helped teachers prepare for school to begin throughout the week.

Huge thanks go to the following parents and students who came on a moment’s notice to get the scanning of all books in each box completed: Barb Falzone, Sue Cantor, Constance Descarpentrie, Emily Dooley, Angela Bernsten, Ann and James Vournakis, Stephanie Schmidt, Julie Yakes, Andrea Bouzrarra, Chris Kent, Karen McCarren, Carlee Bendickson, Char Myers, Meaghan Sheehan and Jelena Dennison. It also gave me an opportunity to meet some of the wonderful parents of our students, and I can’t wait to meet the rest of you at some point throughout the year.

Please note that everyone who enters SLP High School is required to wear a mask and keep social distance. We care about the safety of everyone. Happy Labor Day and we will “see” you next week.

With Kind Regards,

Wendy Loberg
Interim Principal
Volunteers are Huge Help as We Get Ready for New School Year

Big thanks to the SLP community! We had a number of students and parents donate their time and energy this week.

Community members kept us caffeinated, hydrated and fed.
Students helped organize and distribute boxes of materials for each student.

Thank you all!
Virtual Freshman Parent Night Parent Reflections
Last Wednesday night, we hosted a virtual freshman parent night. During the last half of the meeting, all participants went into Zoom breakout rooms to hear and ask questions of parents who have experienced the 9th grade year with their child. Below is an example of the conversation and advice shared in one of the parent panels.

Reflections from Jennifer Thomas, Receptionist at SLPHS and Parent of SLP Kids

I start this year with two Freshman; my youngest is a Freshman here at SLPHS and my oldest is a Freshman in college. Far from a perfect parent on my best days, there are a few things I learned that Ms. Loberg asked me to share.

There are 3 ideas that I wish I had trusted earlier than I did: Don't Ride the Wave, Yes, She Is! and 7 Minute Victory.

Don't Ride the Wave: First, your student is going to meet many new people and have many new experiences in high school. They will have high and lows and change their minds about everything many, many times until they find their best fit. Your role, as best you can, is to just listen and walk alongside. Support, don't rescue as Ms. Loberg says.

Yes, She Is!: Whatever your student's friends are doing chances are very, very high that is what your student is doing as well. If her friends are skateboarding and gaming, your student will be interested in that, too. If his friends are going to theater productions and joining choir, your student will probably do those things, too. And the same is true for less desirable things such as vaping, chemical use, skipping class. If you notice that your student’s friends are doing those things, I can almost guarantee you that your student is at least experimenting with those things.

7 Minute Victory: If you get 7 minutes of uninterrupted time with your teenager, that is a victory. So, use this time wisely! And by that, I mean, get out of the way. This is not the time to teach a lesson or lecture on values. Just listen. Ask questions. And remember...Don't Ride the Wave! Your freshman may be completely obsessed with dance and by the time they graduate they may become an expert in robotics. Anything is possible and this is their time to start learning who they are!

Finally, I want to reassure you that your student will find meaningful relationships at SLPHS. As they say, there is someone for everyone. Whether it is a custodian, a GLC, a teacher or the receptionist, by the time they leave this building they will feel known. We love our students. Every single one of them.

Best wishes to all parents as they begin this year!
