Notes from Pastor AJ

Dear Beluvs ...

We have been working hard on a new service format for Sunday morning Worship beginning September 13th. Soul Matters is the new theme based monthly program that we will be using and we are very excited about the depth and the all church focus that it will bring to PrairieUU. We will also be incorporating more music and a celebratory welcoming feel to the service..

Please join us this Sunday, September 6th at 6:30 pm for the Front Range UU People of Color - Speaker Series  featuring nationally known UU Religious People of Color as we explore what it means to be Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPoC) in the UUA and the Larger Community. Reverend Sofia Betancourt, Associate Professor of UU Theologies and Ethics - Starr King School for the Ministry and former UUA Co-President, is the Speaker on September 6.
Register here. Download the PDF of the Speaker series here.

Please remember that I continue to be available for pastoral care, conversations, and connections. I am available to chat, catch up etc. Please continue to schedule appointments, and calls with me. You can schedule a time via my Google Calendar or call/text me at 720-549-0531.

In Service,

From the Committee on Shared Ministry …

So what does the CoSM actually do? Our work includes 4 general areas in service to Prairie UU:
shared resources; shared responsibility; working together and larger network communication. We are happy to receive your input and feedback in any of these areas.

The CoSM prepared for and attended the Widening the Circle meeting on Tuesday evening September 1st. We shared our listening circle process and obtained feedback from other sources present. The Board, COSM and the Justice League discussed the recommendation on Reconciliation and Restorative processes, part of the UUA document on inclusion.

Thanks for all your time and talent!!
In Faith,

From the Board ...

Greetings!

It is hard to believe it is Fall! There was a time, now long ago when I thought we would be able to meet face to face in September. However now it is looking like it will be much later. The UUA President recently encouraged congregations to continue virtually until May. We will carefully watch the data and recommendations that are forthcoming and seek input from the congregation for when we return. For now, we are given an opportunity to do outside activities, (social distancing with masks) through this year's Auction. Think creatively and offer something fun! The Auction is an important fundraising event as well as fun times! This year, Let's Party Together-Apart!

Last evening the Board and COSM with the Justice League met to discuss the recommendation on Reconciliation and Restorative processes, part of the UUA document on inclusion, Widening the Circle of ConcernJoin our monthly meetings on the 1st Tuesday of the month. We need the ideas and support of the entire congregation.

Have you noticed joint activity and leadership of the Board and COSM? The Board and COSM are working together, many times in partnership to lead and coordinate efforts. Let Fran, Chair of COSM, and me know if you have questions or suggestions. I am finding it a helpful, supportive relationship.

Our next Board meeting is on September 16, 2020. Join us if you wish!

In Covenant,

Vivian LittlefieldPresident
Lifespan Education

Hello, PrairieUU!

Your Lifespan volunteers, staff, and I are busily preparing for this year's Lifespan program! We will be using Soul Matters materials to integrate worship and religious education this year in order to create a whole-congregation, intergenerational Lifespan experience.

In this time of Covid, it is especially important that we create as many opportunities for meaningful connection as possible. To that end, we hope that you will consider volunteering for Lifespan, even if you've never tried before!
Soul Matters includes easy-to-follow, fun curriculum that your Lifespan team stands ready to support you in leading with instruction and materials.

Please join us during the learning hour on 9/13 for an orientation to the Soul Matters curriculum and opportunities - one-time or ongoing - to become involved in faith formation at Prairie!

To volunteer or for questions, please contact Jen at [email protected].

ACTION NEEDED - Bringing PrairieUU Home

Beginning September, we will not be able to publish all song lyrics for the streaming worship services.

If you would like a hymnal (gray, teal or both) so that you can easily sing along at home during the Sunday morning services, send a message to Rhonda W. We will arrange to "check out" the hymnals to you.

We will be using ‘Soul Matters’, a lifespan curriculum for the 2020-2021 year. As such, it is very important that we maintain best practices for copyright purposes.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We will explore lessons learned from the work of civil rights activist, award-winning filmmaker, lawyer, faith leader, and founder of The Revolutionary Love Project, Valarie Kaur, and her new book 'See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love'She shows us how to harness love as a shared practice to fight for social justice. She believes “the way we make change is just as important as the change we make.” We will take time to dive more deeply into the practice of a core tenet of the book, listening. We will be asking: how can we possibly listen to those who have different views than our own, particularly through this difficult time in history and upcoming political season? And do we even want to listen? Valarie writes, “Listening does not grant the other side legitimacy. It grants them humanity and preserves our own.”
