We have a new Coordinator!

Shelby Mills, CHES
smills@schd.org

Please welcome our new Creating Healthy Communities Coordinator, Shelby Mills! Shelby’s professional background is in health education. Previously working with Stark Parks and the YMCA as a safety advocate in and around the water, she has taught swimming, SUP, kayaking, and water safety to people of all ages and backgrounds. She has also worked as a community advocate in her time with Coleman Services as a patient care coordinator. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Epidemiology at Kent State University. In her free time, you will find her hiking, reading, and sipping at a hot cup of coffee—hold the cream and sugar!
NEW PROGRAM - Farm2Pantry
Summit County Public Health is happy to welcome a new pilot project to Creating Healthy Communities: Farm2Pantry. The goal of Farm2Pantry is to improve access to fresh, healthy produce to neighborhoods in need. We will be working with two food pantries and two community gardens in the West Akron and Middlebury neighborhood. By linking community gardens with local food pantries, neighborhoods will be able to benefit from a self-sustaining food network.
MIDDLEBURY
Jewett Park is in year two of park rehabilitation. Jewett Park will be receiving new playground equipment, a gaga ball pit, two pavilions, an area for community gardening, a walking path, benches, bike rack, and landscaping throughout the park.
BUCHTEL
Kerr Park is continuing into year two of rehabilitation as well. This year, the tennis court will be repaved and nets replaced, a gathering space with benches installed, and flowers will be planted throughout the park.
Heads up! The baseball field is going to be used by the West Akron Ball League this summer for a youth league.
BARBERTON
Complete Streets Update

On February 14, 2022, Barberton City Council unanimously adopted the Barberton Complete Streets Policy Resolution which supports complete street practices in Barberton.

A Complete Streets approach integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the transportation networks. In passing this resolution, the City of Barberton will develop a complete and connected integrated multimodal transportation network that balances the needs of different modes of travel and contributes directly to the health, safety, economic vitality, and quality of life of all users, especially the most vulnerable.
Active Transportation Planning

Beginning in March of 2022, Summit County Public Health is partnering with the City of Barberton to continue the efforts for safe, equitable transportation for all by developing an Active Transportation Plan.

The plan will include:
  • A comprehensive set of strategies to ensure better options for biking, walking, and transit,
  • Recommendations for prioritizing infrastructure improvements.
  • Outline recommendations for new policies, processes, and infrastructure based on public and stakeholder input.

For additional information or to be a part of the process please contact Trevor Hunt, Director of Planning & Community Development at thunt@cityofbarberton.com.
