The FFMI/FCVC Aikens Innovation Academy is currently accepting applications/inquiries about its Winter 2020 class, which starts in January. The Aikens Innovation Academy is open to FCVC faculty, staff, and trainees with any innovation (clinical value or commercial potential) affecting cardiovascular care.
Along with the 10-week course on innovation concepts and pitch development, the Aikens Innovation Academy provides mentorship and an opportunity for early-stage development funding. Visit the

PACE Kicks Off 11th Cohort

The 11th cohort of the
FFMI fastPACE Course is in full gear with 12 project teams (3 therapeutics, 6 devices/diagnostics, 3 health IT) led by faculty from U-M, Michigan State, and Wayne State University.
This groundbreaking, four-week program provides a real-world learning experience for researchers exploring the commercial viability of a biomedical technology. The course shows clinician-researchers and biomedical research scientists how to successfully put their ideas on viable paths to commercialization through a process of accelerated business planning and customer discovery.

MI-Pitch Club Offers Unique Learning Opportunity
|
|
MI-Pitch Club is a monthly networking event and pitch competition where U-M students, faculty, and trainees from different schools and disciplines can come together and solve real medical problems and compete for prizes ($$$). Each month is sponsored by a different department or unit at Michigan Medicine or U-M. Sponsors select the medical design challenge and serve as judges for the pitch competition.
The recent October Design Challenge featured teams from the Frankel Cardiovascular Center Innovation (FCVC) Challenge. The competition focused on creating novel solutions for improving patient access at the FCVC so patients can see a provider within two weeks.

Michelle Larkin, Director of Commercialization Programs and Sara Risch, Biomedical Innovation Specialist, gave a presentation to faculty and staff at Michigan Technological University about funding opportunities and commercialization education offerings. It was part of an annual MEDC/MTRAC trip to MTU to discuss the five Innovation Hubs (Life Sciences, Advanced Transportation, Ag&Bio, Advanced Computing, Advanced Materials) across the state.

Kudos to FFMI's very own Candice Stegink, Path of Excellence/FFMI Commercialization Education Coordinator, who received a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mini Grant for funding to run a workshop geared toward
Social Entrepreneurship for the
Path of Excellence in Innovation & Entrepreneurship students. The workshop will feature a keynote speaker, Ted London, Ph.D., from the Ross School of Business. Following the keynote, there will be a design challenge with a social entrepreneurship focus and prizes for the winner.

ONL Therapeutics, Inc., a
Michigan Biomedical Venture Fund portfolio company, develops novel therapies for protecting the vision of patients with retinal disease. The company recently announced the initiation of its First-in-Human trial with its lead drug candidate ONL 1204 in clinical research centers in Sydney and Melbourne. The study will assess four different doses of ONL 1204 and is designed to demonstrate safety and tolerability of the investigational drug in patients with a macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Michigan Biomedical Venture Fund portfolio company, helps doctors diagnose and cure cancer patients and find appropriate therapies for babies with rare diseases by finding connections between patient DNA and published research. Their flagship product, the Mastermind Genomic Search Engine, is used by hundreds of genetic labs worldwide to accelerate diagnosis, increase diagnostic yield, and assure repeatability in reporting genetic testing results. Medical School Office of Research has announced that the recipient of the 2019 Camille Mrozowski Award for Service Excellence is Melissa Schon, Senior Pre-Awards Grant Specialist, Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The award was established to honor a beloved colleague who embodied optimism, compassion, enthusiasm, and a special care taken in her support of the Medical School’s research mission. Melissa has been recognized for her exceptional job performance, and her deep commitment to the success of the research mission and the goals of the ObGyn faculty as she helps ease the administrative burdens through the challenges and hurdles of the submission process.
