Our next activities:
One Earth Film Festival March 4-13, 2022

FREP is pleased to be co-sponsoring a film again this year on
Saturday, March 12th at 6:30 PM
Inhabitants follows five Native American Tribes as they restore their relationships to the land using ancient practices that nurture life. For millennia Native Americans stewarded and shaped their landscapes, but centuries of colonization have disrupted their ability to maintain traditional land management practices. From deserts, coastlines, forests, mountains and prairies, Native communities are restoring their ancient relationships with the land. As the climate crisis escalates, these time-tested practices of North America's original inhabitants are becoming increasingly essential in a rapidly changing world.

Tickets are free with suggested $8 donation. For Inhabitants there is a Virtual Screening, and an in-person screening being held simultaneously at First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple, Chicago.

Many additional films are available to screen, both in-person or virtually during the 2022 festival. Visit One Earth Film Festival website.

Visit our FREP film page for updated information about the film and our co-sponsors.

President's Message
The month of March brings the first signs of spring, our annual Fox River Summit, and our participation in the annual One Earth Film Festival.

This Fox River Summit will be our 10th annual and will be in-person in Burlington, Wisconsin as usual. We have put together a great program ranging from a presentation on salt in our groundwater, to hearing from a local dairy farmer on regenerative agriculture, to the audacious 30 X 30 goals that are part of President Biden’s Conserving and Restoration America The Beautiful plan. This goal to conserve in some form at least 30% of the land and water by 2030 to stave off mass extinctions and the worst of global climate change is a huge undertaking, but one that has been adopted by many organizations across the country, including Chicago Wilderness. What would that look like in our Fox River watershed? See link above for registration and more program details. I hope to see you all there, or that you can view it on our live stream broadcast.

Join us for the 11th annual One Earth Film Festival (OEFF), March 4-13, 2022. OEFF is the Midwest’s premier environmental film festival, and they are “turning the tide” on climate change and environmental racism this year. OEFF is presenting 17 virtual watch parties and up to 15 in-person events in the Chicago area. It is FREP’s 6th year hosting an OEFF film screening. Our film this year is Inhabitants – An Indigenous Perspective. Our remote watch party is Saturday March 12th at 6:30 pm. Tickets are free. We suggest an $8 donation to OEFF to help keep these events free to all. We thank our many co-sponsors for this event. We will have a post-film discussion with Joseph Standing Bear that will add depth and understanding to your film experience. Get your reservations now so you have the link to this great online event.

If we’re going to “turn the tide” it will take all of us – so, please join us at both of these March 2022 events. The goal of both events is to inspire you, inform you, and connect you with others.

Watershed-based Planning

Update for Feb. 24, 2022
Completion of the final pieces for the watershed resource inventory (WRI) is in full swing. CMAP staff are in the middle of preparing the numerous maps and tables that will summarize the field data collected for stream physical conditions, lake shoreline conditions, and stormwater detention basin assessments. The modeled pollutant load estimates are under review by staff and the project’s Advisory Team, and comments are being compiled for the consultant to address. Staff also have conducted an updated review of local land use-based plans—including municipal and county comprehensive, sustainability, and green infrastructure plans, as well as forest preserve and park district master plans—with an eye toward how they may incorporate water quality protection policies and/or practices. The final WRI is due to Illinois EPA at the end of March.

Concurrently underway is the development of the watershed-based action plan which aims to identify potential water quality-based on-the-ground projects, outreach and education activities, and planning and policy recommendations. Included projects thus become eligible for federal grant assistance (e.g., Clean Water Act Section 319h Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Program grants). Opportunities for local and state funding and technical assistance (e.g., Illinois EPA’s Green Infrastructure Grant Opportunities program, CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance program) are enhanced as well. Keep an eye on this space and through special announcements for information about participating in the public engagement opportunities and sharing your knowledge and vision for the watershed!
