April 2022
There have been days over the past two years when I wondered if I would ever get to say this – so I am very happy to tell you that in-person author events are returning to both Northshire Bookstore locations this month.

Back on March 9, 2020, I nervously set up rows of chairs upstairs in our Saratoga store, getting ready for an evening with novelist James McBride, who spoke about his remarkable novel Deacon King Kong. That memorable evening turned out to be our last in-store event for more than two years. Later that week, as I cancelled events and refunded tickets – undoing the hard work of many months in just a few hours - I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried at my desk.

Since that day – as we scrambled to build the virtual event program we now know and love - it’s become a running joke for Northshire’s little events team to come up with more and more outlandish dates by which “SURELY we’ll be back to events in the store.”

That longed for and unpredictable future has finally arrived, and we are so pleased to welcome you back into the event spaces in both stores – our first Manchester event will be the award-winning poet Yanyi on April 1, reading from his collection Dream of the Divided Field. Our first Saratoga event will be the New Yorker staff writer Ben McGrath talking about his new book Riverman on April 8.

Meanwhile, we’ll keep presenting great virtual events as well – we’ve heard from a lot of you that you really love coming to our events in your PJs, from the comfort of your couch. We’re also working buying and learning the technology to live-stream in-store events – so soon you’ll have the option to watch those from home too!

Thank you for sticking with us these last two years – and thank you for coming to see us again soon!

Featured Release

The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.

"A young man travels back in time in an attempt to discover the cause of a momentary flash that has appeared to certain people in different centuries. He is strictly admonished by the Time Institute to do nothing that will alter the course of the future in any way. The punishment is being banished to one of the Far Colonies. Reading this fascinating novel is a little like finding your way through a complex maze and the light shining at the end will catch all but the most perceptive completely off guard. Very few authors could weave threads of a dystopian future, a devastating pandemic, time travel, and habitation in dome-covered worlds into a tapestry as dazzling as the one Emily St. John Mandel unfolds in Sea of Tranquility." ~ Alden Graves

Pre-order Highlight

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Harper’s Bazaar, Oprah Daily, Glamour, Entertainment WeeklyVogueGood HousekeepingParade, Bustle, Marie Claire, PopSugar, Thrillist, Lit Hub and more!

With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes, and a different kind of love story.

On the eve of her 40th birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her 16th birthday. But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush, it’s her dad: the vital, charming, 40-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?
