New Year's Eve Party
Reported by Mrs. Victoria Hagobian

New Year's Eve is a time to reflect on the past year and to look forward to and celebrate the upcoming new year and in this case the new decade. A celebration is exactly what took place this past New Year's Eve at St. Sarkis Church. The event was sold out weeks in advance and every seat available in Chadrjian Hall was set for a guest. As guests arrived the first thing they noticed was that our main hall had undergone some much needed renovation. The renovation is not complete but the newness of what was done was appreciated. The tables were set beautifully, the balloons were hung with care, and the music was playing. Basically, the mood was set for everyone to socialize and to start enjoying their evening.
The dance floor was always full as DJ Harry played a great selection of music. Smiles, laughter and revelry were definitely in the air all night. During the dinner hour, we all got to enjoy violinist Arsen Ketikyan play some wonderful classical music for us. The real surprise was when Zara Dumanian got up from her table to beautifully sing along while he played. The kids even got to enjoy some entertainment of their own as a magician was hired just for them. The appetizers were prepared by the NYE committee and the main dinner was catered by Haikouhi Megerian; all of it was delicious. Her special talent, as a caterer, shined when the Viennese table came out. The display of desserts was a feast for your eyes.
Moments before the clock struck midnight, the champagne was poured, the party hats and noisemakers came out and the brand new TV's were turned on to watch the ball drop and to countdown. Three, two, one and finally Happy New Year 2020! After all the hugs, kisses and well wishes, the guests were invited to go upstairs into the church's sanctuary to start the new year off with a short prayer service.  Everyone returned downstairs to continue dancing and partying.
During the evening, Der Nareg also showed us a video montage he prepared of the year's past events. It was very clear that St. Sarkis Church is truly a vibrant and very active parish. May the coming year be as successful as the past. May 2020 be a healthy, happy and prosperous year for all and let's start off by counting our blessings.
2019 was another year full of Blessings.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST.PAUL TO TITUS (2.11-15)
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly,
while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.
Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on you.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (1.18-25)
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
"Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,"
which means, "God is with us."  When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
THE HOLY FATHERS
This Saturday, January 4, the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Fathers Basil, Gregory of Nyssa, Sylvester of Rome, and Ephrem the Syrian.
St. Basil , called the "Great," was an exceptional leader who helped spread Christianity. At the age of 26 he gave up his wealth and became a monk, and dedicated his life to serve the people, by establishing hospitals, hostels, and public kitchens to feed the needy. He was a talented writer and many of his prayers are used in the Armenian Church and other eastern churches. At a time when a solitary life of a hermit was considered to be spiritual, he instead urged monastic communities believing that no one is totally self-sufficient.
St. Gregory of Nyssa  was the younger brother of Basil, and friend of Gregory of Nazianus. He was educated in Athens and influenced by the writings of Origen and Plato. He was a professor of rhetoric, but became disillusioned with his life as a teacher and became a priest. He served as Bishop of Nyssa and Archbishop of Sebastia.
St. Sylvester  served as the Bishop of Rome during the era of Constantine for more than twenty years. During the time of his service many great churches were built. He took part in the negotiations concerning Arianism at the Council of Nicaea.
St. Ephrem the Syrian  lived in Mesopotamia (Syria) during his entire life. He was baptized at age 18 and he served under St. James of Nisibis. He is credited for introducing hymns in public worship services. He visited St. Basil at Caesarea and upon his return he helped ease the famine during the winter of 372-73 by distributing food and money to the poor and needy. He was a prolific writer and his work, written in Syriac, was immediately translated into Greek, Armenian, and Latin.
