STEM Connection

Third graders conducted an experiment to simulate how caves are formed using sugar cubes, caulking, and water. This was a great way to show how dissolution occurs and speleothems form. They were able to create sinkholes and cave formations through this experiment. Want to know more? Ask a Summit third grader to explain the experiment!

STEM in the Community

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2-4 p.m. in the Library Station Frisco Room, Grades 1-6

At the Library Station, this month's topic is Fall for Science! We'll perform science experiments to find out why and how leaves change color in the fall, talk about leaf identification, and make leaf rubbings.

What is your name? Michelle Brown

What do you teach at The Summit?  Upper School Mathematics and Computer Science

How long have you been working in education? This is my first year [at The Summit]! 7 years in education.

Where did you go to college and what was your major: Missouri State University: B.S. in Mathematics, M.A. in Teaching Middle and Secondary Math, Specialists degree in Teacher Leadership (in progress)

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject? Math and Spanish were my favorite classes.

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite lesson to teach?  I love teaching students about exponential growth and decay.

What is your favorite Summit event and why?  So far, my favorite Summit experience was when the Upper School participated in Leadership Ranch.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?  I would take my class to the Pyramids of Giza so they could witness the magnitude of the mathematical and engineering challenges the Egyptians faced when building the pyramids.

If you could be friends with any superhero, who would it be and why?  I would be friends with Batman so I could stop having to dress up as Batman at my kids' birthday parties. I'd be able to have the real deal!

What is your favorite lunch?  My favorite lunch spot is a waterfront restaurant in Clearwater Beach called The Columbia, home of the famous 1905 Salad.

What is one of your favorite books you have read?  One of my favorite books I recently read is called Infinite Powers by Steven Strogatz.

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?  Developing relationships with the faculty and students has been the most rewarding thing about teaching at The Summit.
Around Campus
Socktober: New Sock Drive
The Summit's Student Council is organizing a sock drive for Socktober! All socks will be donated to the Community Partnership of the Ozarks (CPO) for distribution across our community.

Each class is encouraged to bring in NEW socks: athletic or stylish (not thin dress socks), ankle or tall socks, plain or patterned, for kids or adults. Any new sock is welcome. The class that collects the most socks between October 15th-25th will receive a prize of their choice: a Free Dress Day, a Pajama Day, or a treat provided by Student Council (prize must be approved by their classroom teacher).

Strategic Plan Task Force Update
The Strategic Plan task force has been busy working since early summer on the 2020 Strategic Plan for the School. Incorporating input gained during the ISACS accreditation process, the task force brought diverse perspectives and a generous amount of creative brain power to weigh strategic pillars, generate new ideas, and rank priorities to create the framework for the eventual plan. Over the next 2-3 months, small writing teams are working to generate the more specific and tactical list of activities that will guide the organization for the next 2-3 years. The team will publish the plan in January 2020 and present at the January 23rd Summit State of the School community meeting.
2018-2019 Yearbooks Arrived!
The Summit's 2018-2019 yearbooks arrived last week. Everyone who purchased a yearbook should have received it via their classroom teachers on Friday.

If you did not order a 2018-2019 yearbook, but would like one, we have a few left. Check with Ms. Whitney at the front desk for more information. Yearbooks are $25 each.

Chris Singleton, a former Chicago Cubs minor league player and inspirational speaker, is the guest at this year's Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture. His public talk will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, October 14 at Clara Thompson Hall.

Chris Singleton travels the country delivering a message of love and forgiveness. His mother, Sharonda Coleman Singleton, was one of the nine victims of the tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015.

Singleton captivates his audiences by sharing of his personal stories and experiences of adversity. His message is summed up by his mantra, "Love is stronger than hate," and he has put that mantra into action by publicly forgiving the man who murdered his mother. Singleton has traveled the country and has spoken to tens of thousands of students and young adults. He has also spread his message through national media outlets such as ESPN's E:60, Sports Illustrated magazine, CNN, and USA Today.
