Hacking, Rampant Data Exposure, and Safety: What’s Coming Next?

Massive thefts of personal and financial information from government, banks, businesses, and health care organizations continue to grow. What are the risks for our financial information and local data connected to our homes and families? How can we achieve protection, individually, organizationally, and economically?

UUMFE  Ministry for Earth

"Connecting and inspiring an active community of UUs for environmental justice, spiritual renewal, and shared reverence for our Earth home.”

If this calls to you, please join us at our next meeting 12-8-19 in the Library at 12:30 ( new location) and learn how you can become involved with the Ministry for Earth. We are a group of individuals working in many “In my own back yard projects” making the world better one step at a time. Join us! We teach kids to grow food, protect pollinators, read about and learn how to garden, promote 100% renewable electricity, and create community through concern and reverence for all life.

Need help choosing the your Electricity Supplier?? Do you live in a home in a NOPEC Community? Are you concerned about Climate change? This is something you can do to help with one phone call.

NOPEC, Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council, is sending out their 3 year Electric contract renewal this month for the 2020 to 2023 contract. If you live in a NOPEC community and have not contracted with another supplier you will be automatically renewed by NOPEC in their program rate. But if you would like to sign up for 100% renewable electricity all you need to do is call the number our your contract letter, 855-667-301. Currently the 100% renewable rate is 5.30, which is cheaper than the program rate 5.595. This may change. But By signing up for 100% renewable electricity, in the form of wind credit you will be decreasing you carbon footprint by about 2 tons per year. Check this website if you want to learn more: https://ohiogreenelectricityproject.org/

Tuesday Readers December Read
Nickel Boys

Colson Whitehead, winner of a Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Anisfield-Wolf, a MacArthur grant, and much more, has written a horror story loosely based on a real situation. At Florida's Dozier School for Boys, a reform school that operated until 2011, dozens of boys died, or were abused and beaten. The school is still being investigated. In the fictional Nickel Academy, modeled on Dozier, Whitehead creates a school where, as the book's protagonist says, "All the violent offenders were on staff." Though harrowing, this book sheds new light on racial terrorism in this country, illuminating how far we still have to go to achieve social justice.

Join us for a book discussion at the building on Lancashire at 7 p.m. on December 10th.
Christmas Eve Potluck - We Need You!

The Second Annual UUCC Christmas Eve potluck will be held Tuesday Dec. 24 at 6:30pm in fellowship hall between the services. We are looking for your favorite side dishes.

We are also looking for One Turkey and Three 8-10pound ham donations. If you would like to donate a turkey or ham please notify Cliff Wire - 440-669-7177, or cwire64@sbcglobal.net

We want to coordinate this so we don't end up with 8 meat dishes! :)

Also, we could use a few volunteers to assist with setup of tables, chairs, decorations. Clearing of tables at the end and other tasks as may arise during the dinner.
This will not interfere with your attending at least one of the services (5:30/8:00)

If you would like to assist, please contact Cliff Wire
Food For Our Minds and Spirits

Sometimes it is hard to tap into our spiritual selves or find time to nurture our intellectual curiosity. For a long while, this newsletter included a section in which we pulled together some nourishing materials from around the web and related media channels in order to get us thinking, get us feeling, and get us reflecting on the lives we are living in this big, beautiful world. **Some Adult/Mature Themes May Appear in Links and Other Attached Material**

Allan is traveling to the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature conference in San Diego this week. It's the world's largest gathering of scholars interested in the study of religion!

What We Believe: The Credo Class for Adults

Remember that Sunday Service last Spring where fellow adult members of our congregation shared their spiritual beliefs with the congregation? Well, they went through a series of facilitated sessions that had them discuss and think through all that they shared with us.

This year we are again offering you the opportunity to explore your fundamental concerns in a small group facilitated by your fellow congregants, Melissa Vandergriff and David Kantor.

Some of the questions we explore are: How do you describe your "ultimate concerns?" How do you view God...or not view God? Heaven and Hell? Good and evil? Regardless of your perspective - humanist, theist, atheist, or something else - you'll have the opportunity to explore and share your perspective with a small group of fellow searchers. At the close of this seven session workshop, you'll have the opportunity, at your option, to share your credo during a Sunday service. Whether or not you share publicly, you can expect to increase your awareness of your own beliefs and get better acquainted with fellow congregants doing the same thing.

Seven sessions, 2 hours each, 7-9 PM starting on January 9.
Other sessions tentatively scheduled for February 6, February 27, March 19, April 9, April 30, and May 14.

Limited to 8 participants

Shaker Heights building, Room TBA.

TO REGISTER : Contact either Melissa ( melissa.vandergriff@gmail.com ) or David ( davekcg@gmail.com )
The UUCC Sunday Book Group does not meet in December, but join us January 12 when we will discuss

Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst  by  Robert M. Sapolsky .  The author examines every angle in his attempt to answer the question, Why do we do the things we do?    He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.  The result is a dazzling exploration of the science of human behavior, a synthesis that harvests cutting-edge research across a range of disciplines to provide a subtle and nuanced perspective on why we ultimately behave as we do, for good and for ill. Racial Justice Film Series - The Hate U Give

The final movie in the Racial Justice Film Series is The Hate U Give on Friday, January 17, at 6:00 pm in the sanctuary at the Lancashire building.

We will first screen the movie, while eating pizza, of course, then have a discussion.

This is a recent movie about an African-American teenager who straddles two cultures. Though Starr Carter lives in a lower-income black neighborhood, she attends a largely white prep school. When she sees a longtime friend shot by a white police officer, Starr finds herself caught between two worlds as she tries to do the right thing.

Movie Night is open to all, free except for pizza donation, and a great way to get to know people, as well as viewing movies and engaging in discussion. For questions, see Mary Schatzman.
