Research Program Highlights
ANNOUNCING THE FIRST NIH/NICHD WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH RESEARCH (WRHR) CAREER DEVELOPMENT K12 AWARD RECIPIENTS
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is pleased to announce the selection of the first NIH/NICHD Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development K12 Award recipients. Selected from among four outstanding applicants, faculty Rebecca Previs, MD, MS, (Gynecologic Oncology); and Jonas Swartz, MD, MPH (Women’s Community and Population Health), were named the first Duke WRHR Scholars. Through the WRHR program, the two faculty will have the opportunity to participate in an extensive training program that combines cutting-edge research experiences with an innovative and proven career development framework to help develop the next generation of Ob/Gyn clinician-scientists.
STATE OF RESEARCH – DUKE Ob/Gyn 2019 – 2020
Despite the numerous issues that we have and continue to face at work, at home and in our communities, we are clearly a collective of accomplished individuals dedicated to advancing research in women’s health. Although our overall research funding has remained steady for the last 2 years, our portfolio has changed from ~ 60% federal funding in FY18 to 77% in FY20. All of your hard work this year contributed to 25 grants, 181 IRB protocols, and 205 publications within Duke Ob/Gyn.

A major portfolio highlight is the commitment of the Department to fostering the next generation of emerging researchers. Adding to the great successes of the BIRCWH, KURE and UroGynCREST programs, we received the Women’s Reproductive Health Research K12 award (announced above). Many thanks to everyone in the Department for your commitment to improving the lives of women and their families at a local, regional, national and international level.
DUE DATES & DEADLINES FOR RESEARCH FUNDING
All applications for research funding (grants, contracts and subcontracts) from a sponsor outside of Duke must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Research Administration (ORA). A complete and compliant application must be fully routed and submitted to ORA no later than 8:00 am five (5) business days prior to the sponsor’s deadline to allow time to ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor requirements. In order to meet this deadline, the Research Proposal Submission Form must be submitted no later than 20 business days prior to the sponsor’s deadline. Office of Research staff will work with you to set internal due dates in order to meet the 5-day deadline. Any late submissions require a Grant Application Waiver Request that must be approved by the Vice Chair for Research or Business Manager. In the coming months, ORA will impose a service fee for review of LATE submissions. You can learn more using the following weblinks for the Five-day Review PolicyExpedited/After-the-Fact Review and What is Required for Routing

THE RAPID RISE OF ELECTRONIC CONSENT
Although eConsent via REDCap has been available for a few years, the number of projects and participants using the eConsent tool has rapidly increased as we have moved to a more virtual, remote work model in research. For many research participants as well as study teams, the use of eConsent can lead to improved efficiency and a reduction in documentation errors. eConsent can be considered for any studies at Duke, including those that are greater-than-minimal risk, with final approval provided by the Duke Health IRB.

WELCOME NEW OFFICE OF RESEARCH STAFF – RASR

Earlier this year, the Office of Research transitioned to a full-service model with Duke’s Research Administration Support Resource (RASR) for research portfolio management, including pre- and post-award management. Today is Mark Ferguson’s last day, as he has accepted an opportunity at IQVIA. Although we are sad to see Mark go, we have an expanded, specialized team in RASR that will work to ensure a seamless transition and continue to focus on improved processes and efficiency.

Matt Gibson: Grants and Contracts Administrator (Industry Sponsored Clinical Trials (+ Hope 1000))
Stephen Skelton: Grants and Contracts Administrator (BIRCWH and KURE K12s)
Thank you in advance for helping them to make a smooth transition and have a pleasant onboarding experience.
