Corpus Christi Cougar Chronicle
January 2020
Wishing you good times, good cheer, and a memorable new year.
Dear Parents,
Loyalty is the virtue the children will emulate during the month of December. Using “The Children’s Book of Virtues” the children will learn what the virtue is and how to be loyal.
Loyalty is like an eternal flame. Once enkindled by grace, it cannot be extinguished. It exudes a steady stream of reliability without fanfare or affectation. A loyal companion has no need to ruffle the feathers of egocentric control. If we fall down, he or she lifts us up; if we fail, kind words encourage us to try again.  Loyalty renews our strength and restores our faith in humankind.
All relationships depend upon loyalty for success. Fidelity in marriage. Trustworthiness in friendship. Reliability among coworkers. As a part of our faith, we believe in God’s unwavering love and commitment to the covenant, “I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God” (Exodus 6:7). The last words in the Gospel of Matthew promise loyalty from Jesus to his disciples and, by extension, to each of us: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). How, then, do we cultivate loyalty in our relationships with each other and our God? Ruth provides a simple and yet profound answer. We stick around. We endure the bad times and celebrate the good ones. Most of all, we draw strength from knowing that we can weather any storm because God will always remain faithful to his promises.
The Book of Ruth is one of the shortest and most interesting stories in the Bible. Read it on your own or with your children. Reflect upon the loved ones in your life whose loyalty has strengthened and supported you.

Peace,
Ann T. Sarpu
In Thanksgiving for Loyal Loved Ones
 Gracious God,
I am richly blessed with loved ones I can trust.
Friends who show up when I am sad, lonely or discouraged.
Family members who know me for who I am and love me despite my failings.
Colleagues and coworkers upon whom I can depend.
I give you thanks for my loyal loved ones—
those who bless my life with their dedication, support, and constant compassion.
May I reciprocate by showing similar devotion to each of them.
In your holy name, I pray.
Amen.

Hi friend,
I just wanted to share with you that my child's school, Corpus Christi School, is having an Open House for prospective families on Sunday, January 26th from 11AM to 12:30pm and Tuesday, January 28th from 6pm to 7:30pm. It's a great way to experience the school first-hand. We've been really happy with the strong academics and welcoming community. The school encompasses PreK3 through 8th grade. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more information.
The Gala Committee needs YOUR HELP!!

Do you have any baskets, containers, packaging paper/tissue, cellophane wrap that you could donate to the Gala? We are also looking for filler items - for example, candles, socks, mittens, diffusers - anything that you think we might need to complete a basket. After Christmas, we all have a lot of cleaning up and re-organizing to do.

If you have any items that you think might help us, please send them into the Main Office or if you have any questions about this, please contact Coleen Antico at cantico@corpuschrisitschoolct.org or 860-529-5487.

If you'd like to join us in creating the baskets, please email Coleen. We greatly appreciate your help with this - thanks so much!!
WEATHER WATCH AND DRESSING FOR THE COLD WEATHER
snowman_snowy_dec.jpg
Winter is upon us and it’s important to properly dress for the conditions.
Coats, hats and gloves/mittens are a must for students and adults to be
outside especially when the temperatures dip below freezing. Remember that
the wind-chill also affects the temperature. For example, although it maybe
20 degrees outside, if the wind speed is 10mph, it will feel like 9
degrees out! Not covering up exposed skin can lead to frostbite. Frostbite is an injury to the skin and the underlying
layers of the skin that are exposed to temperatures below freezing. The most common areas at risk are the fingers, toes,
nose, ears, cheeks and chin. There are three different stages of frost bite:
1. Frost nip. A mild form of frost bite that causes the skin to pale or turn red and the skin will feel very cold. If the skin continues to be exposed, if will begin to feel prickly and numb. When the skin is warmed, it may be
painful. During this stage the skin is not permanently damaged.
2. Superficial frostbite. The skin appears red and turns white or pale. If you warm up the skin during this stage, the surface of the skin can turn blue or purple. Sensations such as stinging, burning and swelling can occur during the rewarming of the skin. Even some blisters can form during this stage.
3. Severe (deep)frostbite. As frostbite progresses, it affects all layers of the skin. Numbness, loss of all sensations to the cold and pain usually occur. Large blisters form 24 to 48 hours after rewarming and these blisters then turn black and hard resulting in tissue death.
Wearing layers allows us to adjust to varying temperatures when going from the outdoors to inside and will help to keep us comfortable all day long. So protect yourself and your family by covering up any bare skin during the cold temperatures!

It's flu season!

ALL PRE-K STUDENTS are REQUIRED to get the Flu vaccination by December 31, 2019. Forms will be sent home with the Pre-K students and please return to the school nurse as soon as your child has been vaccinated. Pre-K students must be vaccinated no later than December 31 st .

Protect both yourself and your family this season with an annual flu vaccine. CDC recommends getting vaccinated by the end of October, if possible. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against the influenza virus infection. You have the power to protect your family against flu this season by getting vaccinated!
