Wow. It's May and while life goes on, it goes on in a whole new way. We hope that you are coping well, staying safe and healthy (and for those of you with children at home) - sane.
Daniels is negotiating these crazy days the same way we have for 95 years, with patience, respect for our employees and our customers and despite all the negative news, holding on to our optimism for the future. We hope you are as well.
What follows is yet another sojourn into the warped imagination and curious curiosity you've come to expect, if not embrace! We hope it brings you a few minutes of escape and more than a few smiles.

May Sculpture
We thought that we'd highlight a variety of sculptures, some man made, others astonishingly made by nature. Hope you enjoy.
Bernini was contracted to create a bust of Maria Barberini Duglioli, niece of Pope Urban VIII.
However, he subcontracted the work to Giuliano Finelli. Finelli chose to focus on the lady's accessories: the intricate lace collar, the flower in her curly hair, her ropes of pearls. When released, the bust was widely hailed as a tour de force. Finelli raised the standard for female portraits and an inspiration for future busts. Bernini, we assume, was pleased.

Brimham Rocks, once known as Brimham Crags, is north west of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, on Brimham Moor. The site is known for its water - and weather-eroded rocks, which were formed over 325 million years ago and have assumed fantastic shapes.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, antiquarians such as Hayman Rooke wondered whether they could have been at least partly carved by druids, an idea that ran concurrently with the popularity of James Macpherson's Fragments of Ancient Poetry of 1760, and a developing interest in New-Druidism.
For up to two hundred years, some stones have carried fanciful names, such as Druid's Idol, Druid's Altar and Druid's Writing Desk.

The Death of Cleopatra, 1876, by
Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907)
Edmonia Lewis was an African-American and Native American sculptor during the period of the American Civil War. She became one of the most celebrated neoclassical sculptors of her time.
Created in 1876, 'The Death of Cleopatra' is one of Edmonia Lewis' most recognized works. It depicts the famous Cleopatra in the moment of her death, life fading from her as the poison flows through her veins.
While Cleopatra was a frequently used symbol within neoclassical art, this particular choice of scene was not.

While watching The Thin Man...
There was a curious nonsensical phrase in the final scene of one of the Thin Man films. As the offering of a box of chocolates was being politely declined, Nick exclaims,"Not a hip in a carload." (referring to the effect chocolate has in gaining weight) The others, laughed.
But...what was the joke?
He was referring to a popular Old Gold cigarette advertisement of the time in which a railroad car packed with cartons of cigarettes was captioned
"Not a cough in a carload" (to indicate how smooth and healthful the cigarettes were). Here's one version of that ad.
A 2013 article in the Scottish Daily Mail commented on similar phrases in Laurel & Hardy films,
"not a laugh in a carload,"
and "
not a chirp in a carload."

May Art
Marek Boguszak
is a photographer from the Czech Republic. He grew up in Prague and was strongly influenced by the magnificence of its fabulous gothic and baroque architecture.
Josef Sudek and other Czech masters of photography had a great impact on his reception and perception of beauty.
Boguszak said, "
My photography domain today is mostly landscapes. I strive to achieve peaceful stillness and I am looking for elegance and beauty in great outdoors.
I love capturing moods and feeling, and so I am drawn to the delicacy of light, soft shades and richness of tones."

Alexandr Averin: The main theme of his painting are genre scenes with charming Russian young ladies against blossoming meadows and gardens, shady river coasts, and sea landscapes. Plot of the paintings is filled with sincere warmth and cordial feelings towards children.

John Atkinson Grimshaw
was an English Victorian-era artist now best known for his nocturnal scenes of urban landscapes. Today, he is considered one of the great painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape, and townscape, artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by the critic and historian Christopher
Wood in
Victorian Painting
(1999).
Grimshaw's accuracy and attention to realism was criticized by some of his contemporaries, however, other contemporaries recognized his mastery of lighting and technique, and James
McNeill Whistler, whom Grimshaw worked with stated, "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures".

Real News
The ninth British expedition to Everest brought along a journalist, James Morris of the
London Times
. To avoid losing a scoop to other journalists who might intercept their wire messages, Morris and the editors worked out a series of code phrases with secret
meanings:
Snow conditions bad: Everest climbed
Wind still troublesome: Attempt abandoned
South Col untenable: Band
Lhotse Face impossible: Bourdillon
Ridge camp untenable: Evans
Withdrawal to West Basin: Gregory
Advanced base abandoned: Hillary
Camp 5 abandoned: Hunt
Camp 6 abandoned: Lowe
Camp 7 abandoned: Noyce
Awaiting improvement: Tenzing
Further news follows: Ward
On May 30, 1953, Morris gave a seemingly innocuous message to a Sherpa runner:
Snow conditions bad stop advanced base abandoned yesterday stop awaiting improvement.
On June 2, on an inside page under the headline "Everest Conquered," the
Times
reported that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit on May 29.
With that the
Times
won historic credit for breaking the story; it fell to the
Daily
Express
to follow up with front-page coverage.

Apropos Word Play... & Quiz #2
I have orf chump for nanty narking. Not a bit poked up about mafficking, though I'd much prefer doing the bear. But if I'm to be batty fang by the righteous mutter shunters you could understand and maybe even empathize with me, as I've got the morbs.
What?
(To aid in your understanding of my plight I include these phrases from the Victorian Slangbook.)
Got the Morbs - temporary melancholy,
Mutton Shunter - the police,
Batty-Fang - to thrash thoroughly,
Doing the Bear - courting that involves hugging,
Mafficking - getting rowdy in the streets,
Orf Chump - no appetite,
Poked Up - embarrassed,
Nanty Narking - great fun.
Create your own Victorian story using these (or other Victorian slang phrases) and if we love yours best - you'll get one of those shiny new Amazon cards everyone is using.

"Roll The Dice,"
said the Roman General to the Oracle.
|
A many-sided die from the Roman period (2nd-3rd century CE)
Each side of the die has a Greek letter on it. The die, made from glazed ceramic material, was sort of a
"Magic 8-ball."
It was used in conjunction with an oracle who would be asked a question, the die would be thrown, and a message from the oracle corresponding with that letter would be read.
For example:
"When will my five little kids be able to go back to school?"
Answer: Iota.
(I
ota know, but I don't
