A message from the Rector |

Greetings siblings in Christ,
I was recently named “Rector” here for Church of the Holy Apostles. Thank you for your trust and love. My previous title was priest-in-charge and the position had a temporary nature to it. In the call for Rector, we have made a long-term commitment to each other. I am here two feet in to love and labor with you in following Jesus Christ and share the Good News of God with each other and the world around us. I feel very blessed and fortunate to be called to serve this congregation. From the beginning I have been inspired by your collective faith, spirit of aloha, commitment to service, and abundant generosity in sharing God’s love.
As we look forward, I know many of you are excited about the outcome of the presidential election and some of you are disappointed, while some are just glad it has passed. I have never felt more strongly that it is important to come to understand our neighbors and the people who accompany us on this road called life. The month of November often has an emphasis on gratitude and thanksgiving. Let us use this time of thankfulness to remember that we are a Eucharistic people. “Eucharist” means “the Great Thanksgiving,” which makes us a people of thanksgiving.
When we partake in the mystery of the Great Thanksgiving, we are changed by doing so and we are made more into Christ’s likeness. Our very lives can become an offering in thanksgiving for the blessings of God. What better way to give thanks than to make extra efforts to love our neighbors? One of the greatest gifts we can give a person is to be a listening ear without judgment, to listen deeply with compassion, and to seek the “imago dei” or the “image of God” within. Perhaps we can intentionally look for the moments to be this even more so in the coming weeks, whether it be on social media, around the meal table, over the phone, or on the street. To God we praise, we pray for daily bread, and to be forgiven as we forgive. May it be so.

Almighty and Gracious God, we pray for all veterans of the military and their families, for their sacrifices, their wellness, and for all who work for justice, freedom, and peace; that we all may use our liberties in accordance with God’s compassion.

Stewardship Campaign 2021 |

Stewardship Season 2021 kicked off with the mailing of a pledge packet. Did you receive your packet? If not, please call the office and request one. So far 32 people have turned in their pledges.
With God’s Help you are invited to take a moment to reflect on our individual and collective callings as members of the Body of Christ, and how we each are blessed by our Lord with gifts to seek and serve Christ in those around us.
You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.

Lighting the Advent Candle
A tradition in Advent is to create an Advent wreath made with evergreen branches fashioned into a circle with four candles, one for each of the weeks of Advent. The lighting of the candles reminds us of the coming of God’s promised light into the darkness of the world. Each week, beginning on Sunday, November 29, light another Advent candle and watch the light grow as we get closer to celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Through the generosity of our congregation, we are able to meet some basic needs for anyone facing critical hardship to purchase groceries, rent, electric, and medicine. When we offer such assistance, it is done in the form of a check or giftcard and bills are paid directly to vendors and landlords. The Advent Wreath
A traditional Advent wreath will have four taper candles (three blue and one may be pink) set in a wreath of evergreen branches. A bright blue ribbon may be tied to each candle. Frames to hold the candles could be purchased at a religious book store or on online for as little as $4.00 and as much as $50.00.
One candle is lit the first Sunday of Advent, two on the second, three on the third and all four on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. If the candles have not burned all the way down, a white candle may be placed in a candle holder and set in the center of the wreath for the season of Christmas (December 25 – January 5).
