First held by the library in October 2019, it was the first time the concept was made available to residents of Cape Cod. “The Human Library” creates dialogue and understanding between people in an effort to dispel discrimination in its many forms.
How does it work? Patrons check out a human book - a person - and "read" their story via a one on one conversation hosted at the library. Areas of experience shared by so called "human books" include, but are not limited to issues surrounding ethnicity, religion, social status, health, occupation, and lifestyle.
The Human Library has met with great success as a community resource across Europe and is available at only a handful of locations in the United States. The Osterville Village Library is both proud and privileged to be able to host such an extraordinary event a second time.
