Faith and Environment Weekly

Methane is a far more powerful greenhouse gas than previously known.

  • Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking”, is a technique used for accessing natural gas, consisting mainly of methane (CH4). Research has found that the U.S. oil and gas industry was emitting (i.e. leaking) at least 13 million metric tons of methane a year.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency has drastically undervalued the potency of methane as a greenhouse gas, a new study concludes. Over a 24-year time period, methane is 75 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, three times higher than the previous value. Since Methane is more efficient at trapping heat than other gases, it contributes much more to climate change.
  • Major sources of air born methane: Fracking, wetlands, termites, deep sediments and ocean-born microbes, livestock farming, landfills, wastewater sludge, coal mining, rice fields, and biofuels.
  • Residential uses of methane – Cooking, home heating and cooling, water heaters, a natural gas fireplace.
  • Your individual Takeaway: Transition your stove, furnace, water heater, and gas fireplace away from natural gas and replace with electricity.
  • Your Citizen Takeaway: Support the comprehensive U.S. Methane Emission Reduction Action Plan from November 2021 by contacting your representatives in congress and letting them know that you’re concerned about Methane Emissions and Climate Change. Found Here
