SCRLC Closed Labor Day
The SCRLC office will be closed Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen Tuesday, September 8th at 8:30 a.m. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend.
Art Museum Image Gallery Discontinued
SCRLC has discontinued its subscription to the Art Museum Image Gallery from EBSCO. EBSCO announced that they were discontinuing the product in 2021, and the council needed to cut the database as of July 1, 2020 in light of this year's budget cuts.

SCRLC is still your source for other EBSCO products, including Teacher Reference Center, GreenFILE, Literary Reference Center, and Consumer Health Complete.Need any help setting up links and logins for your students or patrons? Email Claire Lovell at clovell@scrlc.org.
DIRECTOR'S CUP

Cheery Friday Greetings!

We are excited to announce our annual meeting and workshop, which will be held on Friday, October 30. You are welcome to attend whether or not you are a voting member of SCRLC, or representing your library or cultural organization. Circle that date--registration is now open!

Our presenter is Dr. Kawanna Bright, Assistant Professor of Library Science at East Carolina University, who will be speaking on “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Audits: Implications and Applications for Library & Information Organizations.” By the end of the program participants will:

·     Understand what DEI audits are and how they apply to library and information organizations
·     Determine which key aspects of DEI audits apply directly to their organizations.
·     Create an initial plan for assessing DEI in their own organizations.

The business meeting will be brief but will include election of the new slate of officers and the annual awards.

In other news, the Plan of Service Design Team held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, August 25. Task groups are working on the vision, mission, and values review; a membership survey; trends; and the elements that comprise our programs and services. We are going into this process with the many ideas generated by the membership and Board over the last two years. The survey and subsequent virtual meetings that will happen this fall will provide additional feedback and ideas for our “new normal,” thinking not only of the year ahead, but SCRLC’s programs and services over the next five years.

Speaking of surveys, please complete the short book discussion survey whether or not you participated in How to be an Antiracist. We expect to begin another one next month and your input will help us choose the book, time, and format. Thank you in advance!

Yesterday you probably saw the various messages regarding the latest findings from the REopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums (REALM) project. Indeed, scientists have discovered that SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19--is still detectable after six days on four common library materials when they are stacked—a much longer period of time that when they are not stacked. To read those findings and the earlier testing results, click here. Having these results available may help keep our communities safer, even outside our libraries. For example, the last test results found SARS-CoV-2 cells inside glossy magazines. That information helps our libraries and cultural organizations, but who else in your community might benefit from knowing? As our colleague Nate Hill from METRO/REALM committee said on Thursday, “we do not know how many virus cells 1) an infected person will leave on an object, 2) you can pick up from an object, or 3) are needed to cause infection.”

Regarding COVID-19 reporting, a question arose at one of the August meetups regarding how figures are reported for campus positives, i.e., to the local county health department in the college’s community or to the health department in the student’s hometown? According to the Tompkins County Health Department, students who test positive while residing on campus are reported within that county’s figures. There does seem to be a lag in reporting, however. In some of the counties in our region, the campus figures for this week exceed the county totals.

We are concerned for our members who are part of campuses that have had to close for the semester after reopening or are experiencing upticks. The best we can do is to follow the science, e.g. the REALM Project, share information about it and from other reliable resources with others who could benefit from knowing, and follow the NYS Department of Health guidelines involving masking, social distancing, sanitizing, and handwashing.

Please stay safe out there and have a peaceful weekend.

Yours in partnership,

Mary-Carol Lindbloom
Executive Director
