VIRTUAL GALA ON JUNE 23 WILL CELEBRATE
THE LAUNCH OF THE SS UNITED STATES
Special Musical Guests, Rare Video Footage and More
to Honor of America's Flagship
On June 23, 1951, in front of a crowd of thousands and an estimated half-a-million TV viewers, the SS United States was christened by Lucille Connally, the wife of Texas Senator Tom Connally, in Newport News, Virginia. Later this month, at 7:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 23, the Conservancy will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the historic ocean liner's christening and launch with a virtual gala.

This platinum anniversary event, being hosted by West Coast Chapter Co-Chairs David Perry and Mark Perry, will include unique contributions from our world-wide network of supporters, including musical performances by renowned cabaret performers "Meg & Me" (Megan Mackay and Billy Philadelphia) courtesy of the West Coast Chapter, a first-ever sneak peak at young shipster Ryan Miller’s computer-generated imagery tour of America's Flagship, a stunning video visit of the restored SS Rotterdam courtesy of the Conservancy's European Chapter, and a special toast to the Blue Riband holder by the Hampton Roads Chapter.

Offering fun and entertainment for the whole family, please RSVP HERE. This special event is free of charge. If you'd like to make an optional donation, you may do so as part of the RSVP process, and as always, your support is greatly appreciated. We also encourage you to share the event on social media. After 70 years, we have much to celebrate!

HISTORIC SS UNITED STATES PROPELLER NOW ON PUBLIC DISPLAY IN NEW YORK CITY
Four-Bladed Propeller is the Centerpiece of the New Pier 76
A powerful component of the SS United States' groundbreaking design - one of the ship's historic four-bladed propellers - is prominently featured at Pier 76, the newest recreational and cultural public space on Manhattan's Hudson River shoreline. Coinciding with the opening of the Tribeca Film Festival, when fully completed this new public park will include artifacts, landscaping, and interpretive panels that will relay the history of the area, including the indigenous Lenape of Mannahatta and the evolution of the shipping industry.

Originally opened in 1964, Pier 76 served as a freighter terminal for United States Lines. The propeller now on display was recently moved from its previous location as part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

The Conservancy would like to thank the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and the Hudson River Park Trust for incorporating the SS United States at the entrance to this exciting new public space, where hundreds of thousands of visitors each year will be introduced to America's Flagship. Please stay tuned for additional updates and plans as we continue to highlight the ship's historical connections with New York's waterfront.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"Loved this! I teach American history, and include the age of the steamships and trans-Atlantic liners in the technological history of the U.S., so this is a fabulous resource."

- Lindsay, a recent visitor to the digital exhibition, Advertising the United States
