December 2021 | Issue 158
|
|
Welcome to December in Adel. We had a great Thanksgiving this year. Turkey, ham, and all the fixings. My oldest daughter always brings the newspaper. We then sit around the table and systematically go through all of the Christmas ads. This year the paper was pretty thin, a product of everything going online.
That got me reminiscing, as a kid, I delivered the Register. The Thanksgiving edition was always two inches thick. Because of the size, I'd load up the wagon and then bike groups of papers to each block, since my bag would only hold three or four at a time. The whole process took hours. I'd get home at 8:30, shower, and take a nap until dinner.
In my Sophomore year, my dad met me at the door with my two brothers. They were half asleep as he said, "Load 'em up."
We'd open the topper on the truck, load the papers into it, my dad would drive ahead of us as my brothers and I would grab the papers off the tailgate as we did the route. 150 plus papers took less than an hour to deliver that day.
Every year after that, even though I never asked for help, they'd just show up. I'd buy everyone breakfast, then we'd go home and open our paper and systematically go through the ads, circling the gifts we wanted and talking.
We lost Dad a few years after I graduated high school, but the large holiday edition always connected me to him. Although the paper has gone the way of the Sears catalog, he's still there in many of the traditions I've built with my kids and grandkids.
This Newsletter is our own large edition, with Holiday festivals, home tours, Open Houses, shopping, church, news around town, and the return of the Recipes section.
So grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable, it's a fun month ahead. We look forward to seeing you in Adel! Have you have a Merry Christmas!

Recipes From Home - Goldie's Stuffed Mushrooms
This month we're featuring a holiday recipe from our long-time friend and neighbor, Goldie Lane.
After almost 30 years of Christmas and New Year's Eve get-togethers, I can't imagine a holiday without these tasty morsels.
They're easy to make and adapt to individual tastes and choices of ingredients. - Enjoy!
GOLDIE'S STUFFED MUSHROOMS
"I'd never had stuffed mushrooms until we moved to Iowa. While talking to the manager of one of the stores in town about things we were having for Thanksgiving, he mentioned stuffed mushrooms.
When I told him I'd never heard of them, he explained that it was an appetizer and insisted I needed to make them.
Just remember 1-1-1: 1) large container of mushrooms- 1) package of cream cheese- 1) package sausage.
INGREDIENTS:
- One large container of white mushrooms
- One package of Jimmy Dean® sausage
- One package of Philadelphia Cream Cheese cut into cubes.
- Optional - Garlic powder, Onion powder, Mrs. Dash®
DIRECTIONS:
To prepare the mushrooms, remove the stems (I freeze the stems for later use in soups). Using a spoon, gently scoop out the inside edges of the mushrooms without breaking them.
Cook the sausage till mostly done and drain any grease. Add the cubed cream cheese to the meat and mix until the cheese melts.
At this point, you may add seasoning if you wish. I add onion and garlic powder and a generous helping of Mrs. Dash (original blend). Mix till blended.
Stuff each mushroom with a generous spoon of the meat mixture gently pressed into the mushroom caps.
Place the caps meat side up on a foil-lined cookie sheet, and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 40 minutes.
I go by sight; as the mushrooms cook, there will be a lot of juice. I know the mushrooms are ready when all that juice is completely dried up!
You can add shredded cheese over each mushroom if you want (but we prefer not to).
We make 3-4 batches at a time, and we like to mix 2 Maple Sausage - 1 Sage sausage - and 1 Hot sausage; it gives a lot of flavors and a little kick if you like spicy!
Just remember 1-1-1: 1) large container of mushrooms- 1) package of cream cheese- 1) package sausage.
You WILL have leftover stuffing so you can adjust the amount of mixture on your next batch. It's excellent as a spread on crackers or spread on the little 2x2 inch Rye bread or Melba toast and baked till the bread is toasted, and the mixture is sizzling!"
- Goldie
