Dear Colleagues,
It's hard to believe that the fall semester is coming to a close. Full of energy, learning and accomplishments, it's gone all too quickly. We welcomed over 4,200 students into the TRCC family. We were visited by a senator and a representative. An important and timely discussion on civil discourse brought together a broad cross-section of students, faculty, staff and friends. Our Second Chance Pell program started, while the Veterans Resource Fair was held for the fourth time.
In the halls, students could be heard discussing politics and football, art and technology. The Fall Festival dance was a frighteningly exciting and fun student success. Faculty and staff began to implement a new form of governance. And members of the community recognized our good work with unexpected donations.
So, we come to our Thanksgiving break before the hard but rewarding work of finals and papers. It's the perfect time to take a moment to read about a few of Three Rivers' accomplishments from these past months.
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, let us give thanks for all our blessings that we enjoy!

#IHearYou ̶ A Community Discussion on Civil Discourse and Respectful Debate
On October 8, Edward Derr welcomed a diverse audience of students, faculty and administration to Three Rivers Community College's panel discussion, #IHearYou ̶ a Community Discussion on Civil Discourse and Respectful Debate. The discussion stemmed from an initiative of Mark Ojakian, President of CSCU, to ensure that campuses provide a safe climate for ideas and opinions to be freely shared and debated.
Panelists include Mark Ojakian, President of CSCU; State Senator Cathy Osten; Celeste Arrieta, TRCC Assoc. Professor of Foreign Language; Lee-Ann Gomes, Director of Norwich Social Services; and Arieanna Ramos, TRCC student. It was moderated by Edward Derr, TRCC ConnCAS Coordinator.

Senator Blumenthal Visits Three Rivers
On October 11, U.S. Sen.
Richard Blumenthal
took time out to visit Three Rivers to visit veterans in our Veterans OASIS Center and to get an update on our manufacturing programs. Dan Docker, the student coordinator of the OASIS Center (center photo, right) gave the senator a tour and answered his questions. The Senator was also informed that Three Rivers has received the designation of Military Friendly School.
Then it was off to visit the 3-D
Parametric Modeling Class, taught by Mike Gentry, Asst. Professor of Engineering, (right photo) where Blumenthal saw students learning to master the complex fundamentals of 3-D design while working with CAD software. His final stop was a tour of the new Manufacturing Lab with Gentry and John Genna,faculty, Precision Sheet Metal Manufacturing Certificate. (left photo).

Courtney slipped on some welding gloves and received a hands-on welding tutorial by one of the students of
the advanced manufacturing program when he visited the Manufacturing Pipeline Welding Program site at Grasso Tech on October 24. The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) put together
the program with Three Rivers and Quinebaug Valley Community Colleges. EWIB reports that 92 percent of those who completed the the pipeline's first round of classes for outside machinists and welders have already secured employment, primarily with Electric Boat.

TRCC Graduate Kaeshla Vega Receives CONNTAC Scholarship
Kaeshla Vega '16 was awarded a scholarship by the Connecticut Talent Assistance Cooperative, Inc. (CONNTAC) on Friday, October 21.The scholarships recognize low-income students who are the first in their family to pursue a post-secondary education. Vega graduated from Three Rivers Community College in May 2016 and is now attending Eastern Connecticut State University majoring in social work.

Three Rivers Community College Among Top 25 in the Nation to Advance Opportunities for Low-Income Students
Three Rivers Community College (TRCC) was named one of the top 25 community colleges nationwide that advance opportunities for low-income students. The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) ranked public two-year colleges for their effectiveness in serving low-income students with relatively high outcomes. Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) is the only other Connecticut college included in this ranking.
According to DOE, the colleges included in this ranking enroll over 40% low-income students and have relatively high outcomes for those students in earnings and
successfully paying down their loans
.
"We are delighted that TRCC can make a college degree a reality for so many area residents with low incomes," said TRCC President Mary Ellen Jukoski. "The majority of our students are part-time and hold more than one job while still attending college. We provide a very affordable education for these determined, dedicated students in a very caring, nurturing environment that supports their success."
The DOE notes for prospective students, "
It's important to know that both the college you select and the program you enroll in can have an impact on your post-college earnings ̶ schools that offer more technical or health programs, or where a lot of students transfer to a four-year college, often have higher earnings."

TRCC Welcomes Back Graduate Jacob Cullers for Art Gallery Exhibit
Three Rivers Community College is pleased to welcome back Jacob Cullers, a Three Rivers graduate, for his solo exhibition. "Castles Made of Sand." The exhibit, which runs through Friday, December 2, is composed of recent work that Cullers completed while getting his graduate degree at Glasgow School of Art. His works are comprised of both oil on canvas and dust sheet and oil on canvas. More information on the show is available

Large Turnout at Fourth Annual Veteran's Resource Fair
The Veterans Resource Fair, a one-stop resources for jobs, health services, networking and more, was held on October 20. Attended by veterans and their families from TRCC and the greater Norwich area, veterans were offered resources from over 40 different agencies including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Electric Boat, Masonicare, Norwich Human Services and United Community and Family services. The CT Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Outreach Van was available right outside.

President Kicks off New Academic Year with Convocation Address
"Today, we gather to officially welcome all members back to start a new academic year." And so the 2016-2017 school year was officially kicked off at Convocation by President Mary Ellen Jukoski.

Highlights from the Office of Advancement/ Foundation
$65,000 in Donations Received from Two Families
The LaMattina Family provided $15,000 to fund a part-time tutor for our students in the tutoring center.
Earlier this year, Charlie Albright established the Judith Cook Albright Nursing Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $15,000. Mr. Albright just made another substantial contribution of $50,000 to add to the endowed fund that will ensure deserving nursing students the ability to fulfill their dreams!
The Annual Appeal was launched by a video highlighting the value add of donor dollars that are generously provided each year! Special thanks to Kem Barfield and his students and Meghan LaCasse.
