REFLECTIONS FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, which encourages us to give time and attention to our mental health including things such as seeking professional help and support groups, as well as self-care like meditation, nutrition, exercise, sleep, and anything else that helps us feel well emotionally and psychologically. Staying connected to others is different now, but it is another essential component to our overall well-being. In this strange, stressful, and challenging time of isolation and physical distancing, self-care and mental health awareness are extremely important.
VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY
After attending a suicide prevention workshop, Courtney begins using our Helpline "When I was introduced to the Samaritans Helpline at the workshop, I didn’t think much about it. Then, on a particularly rough night a few weeks later, with no one to turn to, I sent the Helpline a text. I spent that evening texting back and forth with a volunteer about the issues weighing on me at that particular time..." Loss, stress, and trauma for a practicing attorney "So, my friends, this is my story of coping with losing my son nearly 10 years ago. But my life has been enriched as Joseph III has inspired me to devote my life to being involved with organizations committed to advocating for mental health parity, education, advocacy, and resource allocation." Inspired by human connection, Rachel steps into the crisis center "I distinctly remember the callers and texters who are not sure what to say but still reach out bravely for the first time. I think a lot about the people who struggled to support their suicidal loved one but desperately wanted to help them. I cannot forget about the people who have lost hope in their own lives but wish they could still hope for a better future someday. There are so many of these stories, among others, and every time that a caller feels comfortable enough to share a bit of their feelings seems like a privilege to me." "Volunteering at Samaritans feels like a gift to me..." "After an excellent training program, I felt both prepared and terrified to enter the phone room for my first learning shift. What if I said the wrong thing? What if someone could tell I hadn’t done this before? What if I had a very serious call and messed it up? A few deep breaths and a few phone calls later, I realized that what we were told in training was true – we are talking far less than we are listening. Most of the calls I took were people who just wanted to talk and be heard."
VIRTUAL BREAKFAST FOR HOPE
Thank you for joining us at our first virtual Breakfast for Hope on April 30th, where Kennedy Elsey of Mix 104.1 talked about what it was like to call the Helpline when she was struggling and in despair, and Chris Portal shared about his losses and his own healing from a suicide attempt. Moved by their stories, the Samaritans community contributed generously to support our lifesaving services.
Even though the need for our services has increased, we weren’t sure what to expect from our first-ever virtual event. With the help of our Board of Directors and the Samaritans Council who were so inspired that they issued a matching gift challenge, we've raised more $450,000 for our programs and services. This support ensures that, especially with the current public health crisis, those who are isolated, distressed, and grieving can continue to receive our services. We are humbled and so appreciative!
