NCWC Kicks Off Sports Stadium Campaign
College Seeks Donors for Multi-Phased Approach
North Carolina Wesleyan College recently secured donor funds to kick off their Sports Stadium Campaign. These funds will go toward the development of a new turf field with lights on the south side of campus. This project is just one part of the College's long-term vision.
The new Sports Stadium consists of a turf field, lighting, additional parking, fencing, permanent seating, scoreboards, a press box and a new fieldhouse. While the initiative will support Athletics, it will also benefit the College academically. In the past, athletes have had to miss afternoon classes to travel and practice prior to sundown. A new turf field and lighting will allow student-athletes to practice and play games later in the evenings. The new fieldhouse will contain a training room, weight room, classrooms, meeting space and offices. Read more.

Unique Outdoor Learning Opportunities on the Horizon for NC Wesleyan
To continue providing a safe, innovative and unique learning environment for its students, North Carolina Wesleyan College recently received a $50,000 cash gift to construct what will be known as the Marvin and Cynthia Barnes – Family Fare Convenience Stores Outdoor Classroom.
“We are grateful for the Marvin and Cynthia Barnes Family Fare Convenience Stores Outdoor Classroom, as this gift will enhance NC Wesleyan’s opportunity to provide unique learning spaces for our students,” stated Elena Koutouzos, Director of Alumni & Donor Relations.

The new outdoor classroom will be located at the front of campus near the Braswell Administration building. It will offer students a fun, safe, educational experience which will expand their perspective outside the walls of a normal class setting. The outdoor classroom will consist of a 20 to 25-seat amphitheater. Read more.

Willie Thorne's Pop Wood Reliefs on Exhibit in Mims Art Gallery
Native of Rocky Mount self-taught artist Willie Thorne is currently exhibiting his wonderfully crafted, painted wood constructed wall reliefs at NCWC in Mims Art Gallery located in The Dunn Center. Free to the public, Thorne's exhibit runs January 14 until February 14 with 9 am to 5 pm gallery hours Monday through Friday.

Rodney Smith, '19 MSCJ was recently promoted to the Captain of the Training and Development Unit at the NC DMV License and Theft Bureau Headquarters in Rocky Mount, NC. He also did a TED Talk in Raleigh, NC entitled "The Power of Communication and Body Language" which can be found at https://youtu.be/Ku3rksZFeaM. He is in the process of writing his own book and online training course on micro expressions and body language training. Rodney earned his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2019.

Dustin C. Holland '02 was recently promoted to Program Manager over the National Security and Insider Threat Program for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Morrisville, NC. He joined the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as a Special Agent in March 2003. Dustin graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Linda Hardy '69 is currently serving as state president of the North Carolina Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. Linda has been in this position since 2019. She is also a charter member of the League of Women Voters of the Twin Counties, and Vice Chair of the Braswell Library Board of Trustees. Linda is a 1969 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English.

Mark Harris '70 and Ruth "Denny" Denson Harris '71 will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2021. Mark is a retired private equity/Venture Capital exec, and Denny is a retired elementary school educator. The couple has lived in Nashua, New Hampshire for the past 35 years. They have three daughters and eight grandchildren. Mark graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1970 with a degree in Economics and Business Administration and Denny graduated in 1971 with a degree in English.

Michael Anthony "Dilly" DeLeone '87, age 59, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. DeLeone, nicknamed "Dilly" by his friends and players, had tenures as head baseball and softball coach at Richlands High School, his alma mater. He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1987 with a BS degree. He played baseball at NCWC and later was an assistant coach at NC Wesleyan under former UNC coach Mike Fox. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son and daughter-in-law, two granddaughters, a sister and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Bruce Ray Wilkie '69, age 74, passed away on December 14, 2020. He retired from Nationwide Insurance Company with 43 years of service. Bruce was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he was a deacon. He loved to travel and loved soccer. He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is survived by his wife, two children, two grandchildren, one sister and several nieces and nephews.

Peter "Pete" Edwin Gerschefski, age 84, passed away on December 22, 2020 at his home. Dr. Gerschefski was an Assistant Professor at North Carolina Wesleyan College from 1962-1965. His primary responsibilities included starting the NCWC band program, and teaching courses in music theory and composition. He served as Chairman of the Self Study Committee and author of NCWC's first Self Study (SACS) in 1964-65. He is survived by his wife, children, sisters and brothers.

Brian Edward Richardson '69 passed away December 24, 2020, at the age of 74. He enrolled at North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1964 where he played baseball, basketball, and soccer. He graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and was selected Male Athlete of the Year. He worked in the communications industry with Sprint for over 20 years before his retirement. He returned to many Homecomings at NCWC, enjoying the annual reunions with his Wesleyan golf buddies. He is survived by a sister and many friends. Read more.

Tanisha Williams '19, age 24, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 in UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC. Tanisha loved music and sports. She longed to one day work with the NFL. She graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Administration with a concentration in sports. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia the day she graduated. She is survived by her parents, sisters, brother and extended family. Lucretia Ann "Lu Ann" Brigman Herring '75 passed away January 16, 2021. She graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Lu Ann had an accomplished leadership career in personal banking, retiring from Bank of America. She also mentored young business women through CRU's Priority & Associates. She is survived by her husband, sister and brother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, niece and nephews.
