All Faith Chapel fundraising
campaign raises over $4,000

The campaign to raise funds to refurbish and maintain the All Faith Chapel at WVU Jackson’s Mill has raised $4,055 to date.

“Contributions have ranged from $10 to $200,” said George Hohmann, president of the West Virginia United Methodist Men. “We are thankful for the many prayers for this campaign’s success, and for every one of the generous contributors.”

The campaign, launched in January, seeks to raise $16,000 for immediate repairs and $50,000 to establish an endowment for the upkeep of the chapel for generations to come.

The chapel has stood as a “silent pastor” on the WVU Jackson’s Mill campus near Weston since 1959. The chapel was built with the support of the United Methodist Men of West Virginia and many others.

The chapel incorporates the traditional forms common to all faiths. It provides a haven for those who would come quietly to worship God, surrounded by the beauty God has created.

Recent donations came from the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church. During a March 10 meeting of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Men, Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball thanked the men for their work on the chapel. The men voted to donate $200 from their treasury to the chapel fundraising effort.

After the vote, the men collected a Love Offering for the chapel which yielded $300.

Some Methodist men have asked for their birthday that their Facebook friends give to the chapel fundraising campaign. One such campaign attracted 43 givers who contributed a total of $2,200.

Little Kanawha District Men
distribute 42,000 pounds of potatoes

The Little Kanawha District Men distributed 42,000 pounds of potatoes to food pantries and folks in need in Wood County and seven other counties near Parkersburg on March 5.

District President Steve Mahaffey said the Maine potatoes were gleaned through the efforts of volunteers with the Society of St. Andrew. “If not for their efforts, these potatoes would have been plowed under or landfilled,” he said.

“It is through the efforts of volunteers like our United Methodist Men that these potatoes are then distributed to local food pantries and other agencies like the Salvation Army and senior centers where we can reach those in need,” Mahaffey said.

“I am thankful for the men of the Little Kanawha District who give freely of their time to this mission to feed anyone in need.”

“With the help of our friends at Peoples Cartage in Parkersburg we were able to load the potatoes to trucks heading to our eight counties in a little over an hour. It was a great day of service to others.”

The men of the Little Kanawha District usually distribute potatoes twice a year. The next distribution is scheduled for Nov. 12. For more information e-mail Mahaffey at steve_south70@yahoo.com

Volunteers needed to help
at Crossroads church camp

The Crossroads United Methodist Church Camp is in the process of building an activities center to enhance the usefulness of the camp.

“Work is on going and we are always in need of volunteers to spend a few hours or a few days to move the project along,” said Steve Mahaffey, president of the Little Kanawha District United Methodist Men.

Daryll Tucker, camp caretaker, can be reached at (304) 494-6955 for more information. The camp is just north of Parkersburg. The address is 6827 Old Saint Mary's Pike, Parkersburg, WV 26104.

Books recommended
by Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball

During a March 10 meeting, Cross Lanes United Methodist Men President Jerry W. Meadows asked Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball if there was a book she would recommend United Methodist Men read.

She recommended two:

* “I’m Black. I’m Christian. I’m Methodist. A collection of stories edited by Rudy Rasmus. Available from cokesbury.com $12.99 paperback, $11.49 e-book. “It’s a challenging book but if you read it with an open mind, it will help you understand,” Bishop Steiner Ball said.

Finding Your Bearings: How Words That Guided Jesus through Crisis Can Guide Us. By James A. Harnish. Available from cokesbury.com $15.49 paperback, $28.99 hardcover. Bishop Steiner Ball pointed out that this recently published book is organized as a small group study.
