2020 VESTRY NOMINEES

Four individuals have been identified as eligible candidates and recommended by the Nominating Committee for the Vestry Class of 2020:
FRED KIRCHHOFF
is retired from state employment and enjoys working outdoors. He usually attends the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service with his wife, Frances. Fred served as Council President and on two pastor search committees at a previous church. At Ascension he has served as an usher at the 10:30 service, and he serves on a Sunday Breakfast Team with the Men’s Club.
JUDITH SPENCER
is retired and usually attends the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. At Ascension, she is active in the Daughters of the King, Altar Guild, Reading Camp, and with hospitality and kitchen help for events of all kinds. In the community, she is involved with The Kings Center Secret Angels, Book Buddies at Second Street Elementary, and Life House for Animals.
JULIA PEAVLER TYSON
is employed as a school counselor for Jefferson County Public Schools. She attends the 8:00 or 10:30 Sunday service and often serves as Chalice Bearer, Lector or Acolyte, and reads Prayers of the People. She has attended Education for Ministry (EfM) classes. She has served two previous terms on the Vestry, serving as Senior Warden under Father Neat, and has served on the Finance Committee.
TORI WORD
is employed as a residential and commercial cleaner. She has served at Ascension as an usher, acolyte, and Acolyte Master. She represented Ascension at the 2018 National Acolyte Festival in Washington, D.C. Tori is also a backstage volunteer for Kentucky Dance Academy Performances. She says, “I hope to help our church in whatever goals we wish to accomplish.”

MUSIC FOR MARTIN
On Monday, January 20, we will celebrate
Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Music selections at Sunday's 10:30 service – the prelude, offertory, postlude, and communion hymn – were composed by these prominent African-American composers:
William Grant Still
(May 11, 1895 – December 3, 1978) was an American composer of more than 150 works, including five symphonies and eight operas. Often referred to as “the Dean” of African-American composers, Still was the first American composer to have an opera produced by the New York City Opera. Still is known most for his first symphony, the “Afro-American,” which was until the 1950s the most widely performed symphony composed by an American. Of note, Still was the first African American to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony (his first symphony) performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television. Due to his close association and collaboration with prominent Afro-American literary and cultural figures such as Alain Locke and Langston Hughes, William Grant Still is considered to be part of the Harlem Renaissance movement. Calvin Fuller
(b. 1943) earned Music Education degrees (Bachelor’s and Master’s) from Texas Southern University. He pursued further study at the University of Maryland, the University of Texas and the University of Houston. His current activities include serving as organist/choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Church in Houston, music commission member of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, and adjunct professor at his alma mater. Fuller is the chorus master for Houston Ebony Opera Guild and Opera in the Heights.

The Rev. Dr. Charles Albert Tindley
(1851–1933) was one of the eminent preachers of Methodism at the turn of the twentieth century. Hymnologist James Abbington has called Tindley a “pastor, orator, poet, writer, theologian, social activist, ‘father of African American Hymnody,’ ‘progenitor of African American gospel music,’ and ‘prince of preachers.’”

will be held this coming Sunday, January 19, 2020, after the 10:30 service, in the parish hall. Your attendance is encouraged and needed as we review the year just past, and make important decisions for the year to come. Please plan to attend!

The budget for 2020 will be presented for review. Reports from individuals, committees and organizations will be available.

In accordance with the bylaws of the Church of the Ascension, Article III, Membership and Parish Meetings, Section 1, Membership: “Qualified voters at a Parish meeting shall be: (a) All those who are confirmed communicants in good standing of the age of 16 years or older, and (b) Any other baptized persons of age 16 years or older who are regular worshipers in the Parish and who for six month immediately preceding the meeting have been regular contributors to the support of the Parish.

- Election of Ascension deputies and alternate(s) to the 2020 Diocesan Convention: Three lay deputies and alternate(s) will be elected; the Senior Warden for the calendar year is automatically the fourth lay deputy. (If you are interested in being a deputy, please contact Leah MacSwords, Nominating Committee Chair – lcmacs@aol.com. Qualifications are the same as for voting and vestry candidates.)
- Early Voting for 8am Attendees: For those eligible voters who attend the 8am service on January 19 and are unable to return for the Annual Meeting, early balloting will be allowed at the conclusion of the 8am service. Balloting will be conducted in the parish office.
