United Way of Calloway County December 2019 Newsletter

United Way Supporter,

We will be having a fundraising event for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in the month of December.

The Cheri Theatre, will be featuring rebate nights at the movies on three separate Monday evenings in December: December 2, 9 and 16. The Christmas classics include The Polar Express (December 2), Christmas Vacation (December 9) and Elf (December 16). All movies are priced at a discounted $6.00 per ticket for both adults and children, and show time starts at 5:30 PM. A portion of all tickets is contributed to the DPIL Program, directed by United Way of Murray Calloway County (UWMCC) and a special DPIL Committee, coordinated by Michelle Hansen, Calloway County Family Resource Center.

DPIL is available to all children zero to five, if their residence is Calloway County. This means that if a parent can't afford to buy books for their children, they can still receive books through the DPIL program. The program doesn't require any type of income verification; therefore, no family is left out. The program also chooses age appropriate books that fit with the different child competency measures for the age of the child.

Donations from attendees to the rebate nights will have a significant impact on underwriting the costs of more children enrolled in DPIL, and therefore improving reading readiness scores in Calloway County.

So please come out to Cheri Theatres and get in the Holiday Spirit!

Senior Citizens Center

Making an Impact on the Senior Community Everyday!

The Senior Citizens Center has made its life mission to extend years to life and life to years. With their Meals on Wheels program they are reaching 350 seniors everyday. 115 meals are delivered to seniors who are unable to come to the Weaks Center. This gives an opportunity to those individuals to socialize and build relationships. Not only does this program provide nutritional meals, it also a program that keeps track of seniors who live alone. Monday through Friday someone is there to deliver a meal and a smile. Making sure that our seniors are okay each day.

Other than their impressive meal program the Center has 120 seniors who regularly use and participate in their health and fitness classes, along with their fitness equipment.

The Senior Center offers a range of events from corn hole to line dancing to ping pong, all the way to sewing and card games. The Center is providing socialization opportunities that directly impact a healthier and better outcome for the seniors of this community.

With such an awesome organization, the community that opens its doors Monday through Friday takes a lot of work and amazing volunteers.

What can you do to help?

The Senior Citizens Center will be having a Meals on Wheels to-go meal fundraiser on Wednesday December 18th from 4-6 pm. Orders are due by Noon on Tuesday, December 17th.
