BULLY AT WORK - 5 TYPES

New research is defining the different types of bullies that may be encountered by workers at their jobs.

Crisis counselors find it easier to help workers deal with bullies when the worker recognizes what is happening.

90% of workers surveyed by Monster.com (job search website) say they have experienced bullying on the job.  51% were bullied by their boss or manager; and 39% were bullied by coworkers.

Workplace bullies are afraid that other workers (especially the target worker): a) has more skills; b) is better liked; c) is competition for a raise, promotion, or to get the bully's job.

Not good news:  Bullies are almost impossible to change.  65% of targeted workers quit their jobs, are fired, or transfer to another department or store.

Most experts agree that to save your mind and health, get out of the bully's environment.

Certified Fraud Examiner - CFE

Four-year college bound students who enjoy criminal investigation but do not want to be police officers, may enjoy learning about the CFE Credential.

"CFEs are part accountant, part investigator, part attorney, and part criminologists."

Applicants must have a Bachelor degree; no specific major is required although Accounting and Criminal Justice majors are a plus.

Fraud Examiner skill set includes:
  • Understand how fraud is committed and how it can be identified.
  • Examine books and records to detect and trace fraudulent transactions.
  • Interview suspects to obtain information and confessions.
  • Write investigative reports, advise others (clients or government officials) as to their findings, and testify at trial.
  • Understand the underlying factors that motivate persons to comit fraud.
Certified Fraud Examiners work in government jobs as well as in many different industries.  Workers who earn the Certified Fraud Examiner credential are paid "premium" pay in the following jobs:

  • Forensic Accountant
  • Information Systems Auditor
  • Management Consultant
  • Technical Specialist
  • Financial Specialist
  • Special Agent
  • Private Investigator
  • Legal Investigator
  • Security Consultant
  • Director of Loss Prevention
  • Fraud Analyst and Fraud Investigator
  • Risk Manager
  • Bankruptcy Analyst
  • Compliance Officer

WOMEN NOW OUTNUMBER MEN IN THE WORKFORCE

Wall Street Journal reports that women overtook men to hold the majority of U.S. jobs for the first time since 2010.  Women held 50.04% of jobs - 190,000 more jobs than mem.  

This is a result of the growth in service industries that employ higher number of women such as health-care and hospitality. 

Men are more likely to hold non-payroll jobs such as being self-employed or working on farms.

Employers continue to add jobs by pulling workers off the sidelines - including those with lower levels of education that have historically faced barriers to employment.  But, these jobs are in lower-paying industries

Also, women are changing to higher paying non-traditional jobs since employers have a demand for workers.  For example, Jenny, a 30-year old, left her retail job to join Alaska Airlines at Seattle Airport guiding jets to ramps.  "It really stinks to be out there for 10 hours when it's raining," she said.  "But once you get that paycheck, you don't cry too much."  
MINIMUM WAGES IN 2020

States continue to raise minimum wages beyond the federal minimum wage of $7.25.   Some cities raised the minimum wage even higher than their state's minimum wage.

Here are the state's minimum wages.  When the state minimum wage differs from the federal minimum wage, the worker is paid the higher wage.
